The Toyota dealer installed my 5100s during the Suspension TSB. the are set at 1.75" . I have a question regarding the upper rubber bushing that is between the strut assembly and the UCL. The bushing is not compressed, it just floats on the threaded rod--which btw looks like it needs more threads. The service rep said it didn't look right to him and that with the factory shocks the bushing would be compressed. I'va attached photos for reference. In picture #001 I've, moved the bushing up so the amount of clearance can be seen.

The service rep said if the parts are incorrect and I supply the correct ones, he will reinstall at his cost...

Idiots installed them wrong! That bushing should be crushed a little bit. Looks like they installed the shaft stop ABOVE the top plate. And people wonder why I think dealers are stupid.

Thanks. I just got off the phone with Sonny at Downsouth MS. I sent him the pics and he said exactly that. The bushing and washer should be underneath the top plate (within the strut assembly)--in fact, that is why the spring top plate has the shape of the bushing. If the idiot tech had looked at another Tacoma, he would have figured it out. Now I have to drive "on egg shells" back to the dealer Friday morning so the stud doesn't pierce my wheel well.

I'm going to the dealer Friday morning to have this addressed. Can someone please explain what the shaft stop is-possibly using my pics?

Also, please tell me in what order these should have been installed? Explain it to me like I'm a child because I want to fully understand it so I can explain it to the tech?

Are all the parts needed for this install visible in the pics I provided?

    BONE STOCK! lol
What part number is on the shocks, not the box but the shock itself, Even with the bushing in the top plate the shaft is still gonna stick out that high, That shaft looks way too long for it like the spring is missing a spacer or bushing

The front shock numbers are F4-BE5-C477-TO

Underneath the top plate, I can feel another bushing. What holds this rod down? Anyone who can provide an explanation of how it would look in an exploded view?

    BONE STOCK! lol
Yet after looking somemore it only makes sense that they didnt put the shaft stop in, they must have discarded the stock washer instead of using it again

Not a Tacoma, but a very similar style assembly. Look at #'s 24 & 25:

So the shaft stop (is that the official name?) goes on the unthreaded portion of the rod? These 5100s only have about a 1" threaded section. I don't want to get a bunch of bs when I see them on Friday. Spell it out to me like I'm a child.

Im not sure what the technical name for it is, BUT, lets start with the shock. First, the rubber boot goes on. Then, a "dish" shapped washer, then a rubber bushing. THEN, the top plate followed by another bushing, washer, and the retaining nut. I left out the spring and spring isolator, but in this case, I dont think they need to be mentioned. From the looks of your pics, the dumb shit installer installed the rubber dust boot, top plate, bushing, washer, then the retaining nut. Tell them that the install was done Impropperly, and demand that the installer be publicly flogged.

Thanks Chris. I can feel a rubber bushing under the top plate, but no washer. Is the missing "dished" washer the "shaft stop?"

The missing washer rests on top of the shaft stop. Washer, bushing, top plate, bushing, washer, then the nut. :)

    Chris,

Is the shaft stop built into the shaft? I just need to be able to picture this?

The dealer returned the TSB bilsteins to me. I have one to look at if you can educate me as to what to look for...

Yes. Its built into the shaft. It should be a couple inches down from the top of the threaded part.

Thanks. After I posted, I went out and looked at the TSB Blisteins. I see the "step" cut into the shaft that would engage the washer. It all makes sense now. Of course, since the 5100s are installed, albeit incorrectly, I can't see the step on that shaft-must be covered by the top plate, bushing or something.

Chris, thanks for your help. I went to the dealer at 8:15 this morning and a different tech corrected the problem. The original tech left the shaft retaining washers on the original shocks.

I do have another question/concern. The passenger side of my truck is a 1/2" higher than the driver's side (front and rear). I checked the settings on the 5100s and they are both set at 1.75". FWIW, the rear TSB was done last week. Is this normal and should it settle to even? If not, what could be causing this?
