So the house I'm getting the keys to in a couple weeks has been empty for the past 5 months so the backyard is about 5-6ft high with weeds. I did however notice that it looks like the previous owner cut down a Pepper Tree because there was a big stump in the backyard. Now this thing is sprouting up everywhere though.

Is there something I can spray? Or what are my best options for eliminating further sprouts so it doesn't come through when I lay grass?

If I do need to spray with something very potent I can keep my dog at my parents for a month or so. But I'll need to lay grass when I bring her back so she doesn't track mud into the house everywhere.

    Thanks for the help/ideas

drill holes into it. then pour some cheap charcoal with lighter fluid and torch it. How it works is it will smolder for days and burn it out without a BIG fire. Worked for me. Good luck!

I lost track thousands of dollars ago.
I forget what the stuff is called but I know you drill holes in the stump and spray that stuff in it and it kills the stump from the inside and It will stop sprouting. The only thing is if you cover it with grass in the few years your yard might sag in that spot as the stump decomposes.

Looks like I might need to do a little digging to see if there is stump left that way I do the drilling and lighter fluid.

I have access to a backhoe and I'm redoing the fences so I could get one back there. Is that a better option? How deep do these things grow?....off to google now

As was mentioned above , your lawn will always cave in here due to the rotting stump , dig it out , fill with dirt , compact slightly , plant lawn , forget .

Depending on how tall the growth is you can use a round up like product.
But the foliage has to be new and tender.
Round up just doesn't work on large plants. It has to be absorbed through the leaves.

Best way....wait for the tree to have all its leaves out and all nutrients are out of the roots....then just pull it out.......it won't have enough nutrients in the roots to live

Should I spray everything and then cut the backyard down before I try digging up what might be left of the stump? Or would it be better to cut everything down then spray before digging?

I'll try getting a picture up here in a second so you have an idea what I'm dealing with.

Weeds Galore mixed in with Pepper Tree Sprouts throughout the yard

It's like this for about 60 feet across the back and 40 feet along both sides of the house. I'm taking down the enclosed patio thing picture below because the branches have grown through the walls in numerous areas.

For a herbicide to work it has to have foliage. So you have to spray and give it some time, depending on the type you use. Some work faster than others. (Days versus weeks) Or in my case I mix it a little stronger and it takes hours.
Note: do use anything that is an extended use killer. Blocks weeds for a certain period of time or it will prevent your new grass from coming up.

Any herbicide you would recommend over another? It can last about 2-4 weeks since the inside of the house isn't move in ready either I'll be staying elsewhere. And mixing it strong sounds good to me, the quicker it starts to die I assume the quicker I can start cutting/digging it out.

We had a number of 4"-8" dia. bushes/trees and used Roundup Super Concentrate. I cut the trunks down even with the ground, drilled several 1/2" dia holes down toward the roots and poured roundup down the holes. Its taken a year or so but the stumps are rotting out with no new growth. Larger trees over 8" were cut down used a stump grinder.
