As attractive as it looks on a dyno, until the turbo four reliability is validated, I think a lot of prior-gen Tacoma owners in particular will want to continue to practice safe six…

Is the NX having problems with the turbo?

Is the NX engine built in Alabama?....As seen with the Tundra/LX engines there can be a difference where the engines are built.

If there are no issues with the NX that IS a good sign that the design is solid, assembly/parts manufacture can be a different story (as seen with Tundra engine).

And only 54% of the engine is the same as the cars 2.4 so there is a reliability curve to be earned here.

That’s a good question. Although, Toyota has repeatedly communicated the NX’s 2.4T is only 50% shared with the Tacoma’s, and the intended use case between the two differ greatly.

My personal opinion is the 2.4T should be fine.

But, if my personal opinion was that they won’t last over 100k mi w/o a major repair, is there yet any substantive data that suggests either opinion is correct?

So, I neither agree or disagree with those who buy now, or wait until mid-cycle. Either way right now it’s a good truck.

How are the two engines different and why? Asking because I do not know. Thanks.

Also, I thought just yesterday someone on here stated that all Toyota engines of a given designation (for example:V35A-FTS) are built in the same plant.

This article is about the highlander but same thing, shares half parts.
    https://www.roadandtrack.com/news/a45954715/2024-toyota-tacoma-engine-explained/

I don't know what they are doing with the latest generations but a lot of the Japan built vehicles used to come with a sticker that said built 100% in Japan. On the car care nut video on the GX 550 a few days ago he mentioned that the engine while the same..is built better than the Tundras.

At 2:20 mentions engine made in Japan noticeably better quality plastics etc. than other same engine...etc. Could be anecdotal... The Huntsville plant only builds 1/3 of Toyotas engines....(that is a lot of engines) but some have to be built elsewhere,

Looking at their press release info/ looks like they are building the Tacoma engine (which we know)...So I don't think that anyones caution to make sure the builds are solid and the kinks worked out are unreasonable. I personally want to see at least a good number at least reaching powertrain warranty mileage to identify any kinks that might be found due to mileage and any mass production kinks before I would trust the powertrain to tie up that much money. That doesn't just go for the Tacoma though...

Might have been built (i.e. assembled) in Japan, doesn't mean parts weren't sourced elsewhere.

My 4Runner was built in Japan. These are the OEM wheels.

Not really my wheel. Didn't feel like sliding under the car for a pic but mine do in fact say "CHINA".

if I had a newer Gen 3 say 2021 or newer. I wouldn’t even bother going to a Gen 4 until I lost confidence in the old one. No need spending the money until it’s old and wore out.

There are many (to include on this forum) who have bought more than one and sometimes two gen3s. Other than minor facelifts, there were no significant changes. I doubt many will heed your advice.

Jeep people are the same way. Everyone was scared of the JL’s until they were not.

Are all of the 2GR-FKS in the 3g built in Alabama as well? If that engine is believed to be well built and reliable I don't think the build quality (based on location) should be questioned on the turbo 4. The question of a new engine is another issue that I think would be fair to judge based on Toyotas reputation. Can a turbo 4 stand up to the demands of truck is yet another area of question. I think all will be fine, that's why I am buying one.

A turbo 4 is standard on full-size chevy trucks with 9,300 tow capacity (4wd). I think it will do fine in a Tacoma.

The two main things with a turbo are:

    1. Change the oil at or before the intervals. Do not cheat.
    2. Chill the f__k out on the engine a few minutes before arriving at your destination. Don't ride a turbo hard and put it away wet. Is this nearly as big an issue as it was 35 years ago? No. Is it a complete-non issue today? I'd venture to say no.

There were significant changes from my 2017 to my 2021. At least they were to me. LED Lights, power seat with height adjustment, transmission programming, and a cruise control that works.
