It’s been several years since I drove a manual, but I just bought a gen4 manual and noticed the shifter shakes pretty violently when driving over uneven road such as pot holes bumps etc.

Everything operates just fine. My last manual was a Buick regal, sweet little ride before wrecking it a while back. I recall being able to feel some feedback on the shifter but not nearly as much as the Tacoma.

Just curious if this seems normal.

Normal. All manuals I've driven have done this.

Appreciate the feedback, I figured as much considering it’s been a smooth ride otherwise. Thanks fellas!

An uneducated guess would be that the lever arm is longer in a pick up vs sedan resulting in more movement at the "top".

If you've only driven transverse manual trans cars, it would make sense that you'd see a difference in vibrations here. The shifter goes directly into the transmission in rwd/4wd cars and trucks - so you get all the nvh through the shifter that the engine is experiencing. Not like a transverse transmission with the shifter connected through cables.

My Gen2 did this as well. Totally normal. In fact, the hefty weight of the shift knob itself is often due to an integrated vibration damper.

It's a knee jerk reaction. Any question to MT owners about the feel of an MT is like asking an AA group what their favorite hard liquor is and why.

Interesting point! I had no idea there was a difference, my Buick was front wheel drive so guessing it may have been a different mechanism. Off topic but that also jogged my memory of the Buick suffering from steering pull when hitting the gas. Glad to be behind mt rear wheel drive machine, really enjoying driving again.

@OP how was the buying process? Was it on the lot or did you put a deposit down and wait? If so how long did you wait? Which trim level, options/color did you end up with?

Found a black SR MT 4x4 available in a lot 3 hours away in a metropolitan area. Dealers near me were not offering anything manual. I inquired about the truck on a Monday, made an appointment to check it out on Saturday. Looked it over, test drove it, etc. Dealer said they were excited to have it, but didn’t have any buyer interest. I asked why it was still available considering I inquired about MTs at other dealers and they were all in transit and already bought. This dealer made it sound like this truck sort of just showed up for them and wasn't a special order or customer cancel. I suspect it was available 1. not many city drivers wanting manual, and 2 I almost didn’t buy it b/c the dealer told me it had the 220 hp engine (based on research it’s 270), 3. a bit pricy. Being as expensive as they are, this is the only trim I had any interest in, drove awesome, has a lot of get up and go, and for a base model it has a decent amount of convenience features for my liking. I don't offroad, and I'm used to not having bells and whistles. Not having remote start was the biggest thing I was giving up but worth to me for MT. Still waiting to realize if there are any features that I will miss or feel fomo ;). Other than that, I paid MSRP, there were a few hidden bullshit addons that I partially negotiated off but did pay for some both because I liked the salesman and I'm not a master negotiated, what gives, I am happy with the purchase. Only 300 miles, but so far drives great, rides smooth, looks good, and delivers power when requested.

This right here about sums up why I keep going back to the MT SR as a viable candidate. I have ordered (major air-quotes) a fully loaded OR MT, but I know it'll be painfully expensive if or when it ever arrives.

Here is a picture of what the transmission looks like. As previously mentioned, most RWD cars and older trucks have direct shifters, but surprisingly (to me) the Wrangler and Bronco both have cable shifters.

You get better feel with a direct shifter and can tell if the synchros are ready, or if they are a little sluggish on a cold morning.
