The IT has been outsourcing / sending tech jobs overseas to the lowest cost countries for at least as long as I have been in the field (1992). For decades, India was the go to place. For things such as call centers, IT support roles, software development....., and India is still a major player, but no longer the only one. The Philippines is huge for call centers (the people you talk to when you call your bank, insurance company, doctor's office....). Russia has been a huge place for software development for decades, ever since th Soviet Union ended, and suddenly there were these zillions of extremely highly trained/educated engineers that now had no job, so they would work for anyone, for little money. South America is recently becoming a very popular place for IT jobs to be done remotely, for US companies.

For example: my last job, I was hired to institute Major Incident / Change / Problem Management teams and processes for the company. I interviewed/hired people for all 3 teams. I was given the restrictions that I could only hire from India, Poland, and Colombia (south America). Once I had all positions filled, I had 6 total in India, 1 in Poland, and 1 in Colombia. Since I had been hired to be a Manager, I got a pretty nice salary. I was actually not privy to the salaries in any of the other countries, the local HR people handled that. So, after I had gotten things off the ground, about a year on with the company, we hired a new Vice President of I.T.. About 8 months later, he scheduled a meeting with me. When I got on the Zoom meeting with him, he wasted no time in telling me "Your position has been eliminated so we can use your salary to help fund some of the technology refresh projects for next year". He didn't even tell my own Manager, he just did it. Now quite obviously, my salary, while very nice, was not even pocket lint compared to the money the company was going to spend on upgrades/new technology in 2024, I knew his BS was just that, pure BS, but it wasn't going to change anything, so whatever.... About a month after I got dumped, which looking at the company's job postings, I just happened to see they had a new job posting for a Major Incident Managed, based in Colombia. So it was obvious, this guy figured "I need to make a good impression here, so this guy has things running very well, and since he's the only US based person in that group, I can get rid of him and replace him with someone making 10% of his salary, with no ill effects to the performance of that team". That's my theory, anyway.

A few majors that I deal with tried to outsource tech support. The bottom line is communication. If there’s a language barrier I’ll ask to speak slowly. No matter how much you know if you can’t get the message across, it’s dead in the water. I wonder how many CO’s just see the bottom line & don’t really care about customer satisfaction other than some sort or touchy feely “we care” thing. Be interesting to find out what the guys in the field think of these changes.

I absolutely agree. But the companies I have worked for (in several different industries) don't seem to be overly concerned about the communication, as they are about the bottom line $$$.

A couple of months ago, I responded to a "group" topic on LinkedIn that I was invited to participate in. It was a question about employee satisfaction trending lower overall in recent years, company efforts to address it, etc.. I replied with essentially this, but in more detail: "I love it how so many companies tout themselves as 'Our employees are our #1 resource!' on their web sites, career sections, and share all sorts of stories about why they are the world's best place to work. And yet, every single one of those employers will cut jobs as the very first reaction to a need to save money. This demonstrates they actually do not care about their employees all that much, because if the employees are truly the #1 resource, senior leadership would find other ways to save money, and lay offs would be the absolute last resource."

I got a ton of "likes" from other people on LinkedIn for that response :D I wasn't expecting that, and if a recruiter from a company I have applied to sees that, it may cost me a job, but at this point in my life (I turned 57 a couple weeks ago), my feeling is, if that response rom me causes an employer the butthurt, then I don't want to work for a pansy ass outfit like them anyway.
