First Tow 24 Sport

I pulled this ~60 miles today. A combination of 2lane county roads and 10 mile uphill pull on RT80. The wind pushes it a bit. I kept my speed at 60. It was on full boost a lot going up hill. Not sure if that’s bad?. Trailer is ~5000lbs
It doesn’t pull like my 5.7 Tundra but it did okay. I messed with the Utv load to get it more level.

Is the 5000 lb trailer weight dry or loaded?

 

yikes.. that's definitely not good if done all the time

 

I had that exact trailer and towed it with my f150. I def wouldn't want to tow it with my tacoma with a bunch of stuff in it

edit: and damn that's a lot of stress on that hitch with the extension

Why the hitch extension? Did you do the math on the increase in lever arm/tongue weight for it to make sure you're still within limits?

 

No I had this hitch on my tundra 5.7. I needed a long hitch so I could open the tailgate while the trailer was hooked up. I think I can go back to a standard hitch now. The taco tailgate is shorter and the receiver seems to sit farther back. Still trying to find the right set up

 

I’d be careful…Toyota break in period is 621 miles. Should avoid high revs and recommend no towing for same period.

 

Is that a 8.5x16 trailer?

 

I'd want that hitch way closer, it multiplies tongue weight the further out it is.

Thanks I forgot to add a couple things. The integrated trailer brakes worked perfectly. Also the new taco recognizes that there is a trailer and asks you to confirm. It then says it’s disabled something. I need to very what it’s doing in the manual

 

got a picture from the front of the truck and trailer connected? What add on mirrors are you using?

I ask as I am trying to decide on a 7.5’ or 8.5’ wide trailer for hauling my car in.

If I were buying a trailer now, I'd look for a narrow one with the side driver escape door. The taco is just a little small for an 8.5 wide trailer

Oof. That's V shape is not good. Too much for a midsize.

 

I wouldn't be super worried about it. Watched the car care nut video and read through some of the technical documentation, not only is the engine built super stout but the water to air intercooler should really help keep IAT's down while towing like that. Sounds like it's well within the trucks means to operate like that. Only thing that gives me brief pause is if OP did it under 1000 miles on the odo.

Bet it felt a lot better than my truck towing a similar load, 2grfks running at 5000rpm to get up a steep hill

 

I'd get a shorter hitch, as others have mentioned, and I'd also get a weight distribution hitch to get some of the weight off the rear axle and moved to the front end. That would help a lot. If you need to be able to open your tailgate, and can't with the shorter hitch, I'd suggest relocating the trailer jack instead of getting a longer hitch.

 

Are you finding the mirrors shake or don’t give you the visibility you need? I don’t plan on driving in, going to winch the car in like I do now with my flatbed trailer. I am leaning towards the 7.5’ for more visibility but the extra room of the 8.5’ is enticing.

 

No, they don't shake, I just cannot see to make confident passes, etc. I'm staying in the right lane and praying for no left turns, lol
