Comparing my old 2G tacoma to the new 4G, Toyota did reduce the rear legroom. There is no point to even have backseats

I agree. I’ve been a rear seat passenger in my own 1st and 2nd gen double cabs. It’s not bad if you are under 6’ tall. So what if your knees are an inch from the rear of the front seat. You don’t need to have several feet of air space. As long as the seat isn’t slammed into your knees 2mm is the same as 6’ like in an F150.

I’ve bolted some stuff to it *lists cool stuff here*
+1 unless a 6th gen T4R magically got substantially bigger than 4th&5th its not very spacious, my kids are 3 and 5 and its already getting small. Sister has a gen 5 didn’t get any bigger then.

You might think differently if you were ever to have your children in that truck and you got into a very serious accident.

I was about to post the same thing, except I'm not sure it would have to be a serious accident to have serious consequences.

    Stock for now
I just bought a 24 crewcab Tundra and have no kids and pretty close in price to new 4GEN with incentives. My 1st Toyota pickup was an Xcab 1987. Owned two Tacoma DCs (06 and 13). None were known for rear seat room. Not surprised about the 2024 Tacoma being the same. Originally wanted a doublecab Tundra, but even their rear room is lacking thus I purchased the crew.

About as much leg room as a school bus.

All these new trucks have longer hoods due to the amount of cooling turbos need to remain reliable. No surprise the rest of the vehicle shrunk to accommodate.

The only seat my kids carseat fits 'comfortably' right now is in the middle of the back of my 24' DCSB. Their feet sticks up between the two front seats onto the armrest. But this is our secondary vehicle and we have a more comfortable family vehicle for longer road trips. I don't see an issue with the 24 for shorter rides. It is far from ideal though and my kid has to literally climb over/into the seat to get in. It is a large carseat though its one of the convertible ones that starts with babies and grows/expands. I expect comfort level will go up a bit when I switch to a carseat meant for older children that isn't as bulky.

The rear leg room in the next gen 4Runner shrunk to accommodate the hybrid battery.

Is that in writing from a Toyota engineer anywhere? Turbo engines have been around for decades in much smaller vehicles with much smaller engine bays and not had issues. Shit, on my last Audi the turbo was mounted on top of the engine in the V between the cylinder heads and covered by the typical huge plastic intake/engine cover.

The measurements tell a different story. More rear leg room in 4th gen than second gen.

Part of me wants to point out that there are far better vehicles that will transport your children comfortably and will not reflect a compromise for them and part of me goes back to the days where as long as my leg circulation wasn’t cut off, the backseat of any vehicle was sufficient, without a tablet, climate control, or even the benefit of a three-point belt.

No but you can visually see how long the hoods are on all the new trucks compared to all previous generations. Just the way the cookie crumbled for design I suppose

My two favorite places to ride as a kid, other than the front passenger seat in those halcyon days before airbags, was the way back of our friends station wagon facing backwards or in the cargo area of my grandmothers 2 door blazer. I often had a gameboy or a book though…
