bowhunters, i choked!

i have been chasing turkeys.

this friday, they were gobbling good, right up until i set up my blind and decoy. the woods fell silent. at noon i got hungry and need a break, so my buddy and i make the hike back to the fridge to heat up some leftover pizza. quick scarf, and we head back. "GOBBLE!". we run forward and bino the blind. i kid you not, the blind had 8 birds around it. they were pecking my decoys. i creep to the last bush and range the biggest bird. i read 40. my hands were shaking so bad!! my ears, i could hear my heart pumping the the blood rushing. it looked more like 30, but i used my 40 pin, and sailed $40 bucks worth to arrow into the woods. "PUTT!" they disappear.

dejected i climb back in, buddy climbs into the blind and begins ribbing me. 2 hours later, a pair of jakes show up. 20 yards. we hope for a double, which should be easy because my friend has a shotgun. we give up on the chance of the double..and i let my arrow fly. just the very second i pull the trigger, the bird took a quick step forward. my arrow blew up his tail feathers on the way to the deep forest.

ARGH! so much fun!! but what a non-buzzer beater.. hitting the woods again SAT with the wife as a good luck charm.

 

good luck with it bud. you'll have those adrenaline pumping moments. i have them every single time im in the deer woods and a doe or buck come out....every time.

 

they are not easy to kill with a bow that is for sure. good luck

 

dont know what its like to miss a turkey, but if its anything like missing coyote, then yah... it sucks. dont give up dude remember to breathe and enjoy what you see until you release the arrow. then watch that SOB flop allover the ground. its an awsome feeling. i dont use a bow and arrow, but im sure that its a better feeling when you get one with that than using a rifle. keep your head high and next time take your pizza with you in the blind. good luck man...breathe!

 

if you didnt have an adrenaline rush, it sure wouldnt be any fun. when i have a yote in my scope (which dont happen very often) my heart beat bounces me off the ground a couple inches. its awsome. guess you could say it keeps the ticker clean!

And don't feel bad about getting that rush and not being able to make the shot guys. My buddy's an old army infantry guy and he still has that rush... I saw him take 3 shots at a coyote at about 60 yards and he was so jacked up that he never hit it. He was just jazzed that he got to take the shots. Just enjoy the moment. That's what it's all about.

 

Damn man! Close call!! Bowhunting birds is tough though, and misses are bound to happen.

My turkey hunt is comin up in 10 days. Got a 5 hour drive ahead of us, and we're setting up in the same spot I got my 22lb bird last year. This is gonna be fun. Taking the new GoPro with me, but unfortunately the Tacoma is staying home. I'll probably take the shotgun this year, as it's a long drive to come home empty handed. Tried the bow the first year, but got busted. Bird was strutting up a hill straight towards us, 15 yards away. Saw the tips of its tail feathers and drew back. Must have seen my upper cam and that was enough. Could have flung a 40 yarder, but I didn't want a body shot... and probably would have missed anyway.

I have been known to miss an animal or twelve with my bow. But it is a rush from hell when you draw back on them. I missed 2 deer last season with my bow but by god it felt good when i finally connected. Turkey season starts up saturday here! goin out thursday and friday morning to see if i can find where they are roosting. hopefully they will be in the same area they were last year because i have a great stump hole to set up in

 

somewhat related....the first time I got a chance to shoot a deer, she was no more than twelve yards to me, didn't even know I was there. I did everything I thought I should have done. Lined my pin up....missed totally low. I was so jacked up I couldn't help it. She kept on walking, stopped, started snapping her tail, I couldn't get another shot off, she looked back, as if to say "wtf?" and kept on walking. She really had no idea. It happens man, but that's the fun of it. Keep trying, and post pics when you do.
