You can't get the TSB done if you are outside of the 3 year, 36k miles warranty.

Just buy an add-a-leaf for $75.

i know a lot of people who have done the tsb, also get another leaf to add to the tsb, so would i need to add a leaf, and then another leaf to make up for not being able to get the tsb leaf? does that make sense... or am i putting too much thought behind this?

The folks who add a leaf to the TSB are using the 1.5" Toytec AAL for TSB.

If you want roughly the same amount of lift as them, you could get a 2" or 2.5" AAL instead.

Is that the only reason for AAL's? or don't they also do it to add load carrying?

Not technically, because the specified payload capacity of the truck also depends on how much load the shocks were designed to dampen, how much the composite bed is meant to hold, and how much additional weight the tires are rated for, etc.

That being said, if you stiffen up the rear with an AAL, it will take more weight to bottom the truck out than before.

I understand that of course, but I also think it's pretty well known the weakest link in the Tacoma are the leaf packs. So much so that beefing them improves the trucks ability to carry loads at rated capacity, without sagging and bottoming.

Correct the stock leaf pack is quite weak. I just didn't want to suggest that after you get the TSB, that putting an add-a-leaf in will increase the payload capacity above the advertised weight.
