It is, which is why I asked a legitimate question that is relevant to the to the topic of this thread of which I have personal interest in...

 

Yes I am involved with them. My 2 boys are as well.

 

Got my Eagle in 2008. Troop 685, San Diego, CA.

 

Got my Eagle in 08 as well. I'm also from Maryland. Troop 840. Capital Area Council. Still involved when I can be.

What troop are you with if you don't mind me asking?

I made it to Life Scout back in the day... then I became a Marine.

 

never did scouts, my dad is an avid outdoorsman but doesn't like people or groups. so we just did all that fun camping/hunting/outdoors stuff together and didn't bother with the group thing. having said that, the boy scouts have 3 purposes. teach kids about nature. keep them occupied and off the streets. and teach them how to be a man. boys need other men (preferably of good standing and morals) to teach them how to be a man. and i'm not just talking about standing up for whats right, or holding doors for a lady. I'm talking about just being a man. how to act and behave around other men, or in society in general. how to be a good friend and make good friends. how to deal with every day problems in life. now i'm not bashing women, or what they are able to do. but a woman cannot teach a boy how to be a man. plain and simple. can a woman be a good teacher when it comes to the outdoors and surviving? absolutely. but at the end of the day when everyone is sitting around a camp fire, a woman cannot teach those boys how to be a man. so for that reason, and that reason only, i say a boyscout leader needs to be a man.

Was a scout and made it to Life.
Worked with both my kids when they went through a troop.
My oldest was lucky enough to attend a National Jamboree and on the way there they also went to Florida and New York on that trip.

I was lucky enough to attend Philmont with my oldest son in 1999.
Great trip 80 miles of backpacking in some of the best country around and reached the highest Mtn. I personally have ever been up. Mt Phillips el. 11'721' stayed on top for one night. base camp was about 7000' so you best be well trained for the hike.

Great memories for us.

Eagle Scout in 2005, Followed my brother, Dad, 3 uncles, and a cousin. Have a younger cousin now that I help out with. Gotta love Pinewood Derbies. Made OA the summer after I got my Eagle, Did the Ordeal, never made it back for Brotherhood. It was more of a popularity contest in my Troop than an honor.

I made it to 3 high adventure bases, Northern Tier- Bissett, Manitoba, Philmont, and the Bahamas- Great Abaco Island, Bahamas. All three were amazing, and made significant impacts on my life/maturity.

Well put! Idealy though, it should be the father that teaches their sons how to be men. Boy Scouts is a good suplement I guess.

I was never in the scouts myself. I joined Civil Air Patrol and decided that Boy Scouts were for wimps! It's all good though. They are both excellent organizations!

 

Come to think of it, when I was in Cub Scouts my Mom was the Den Leader...

 

Scouting is a good way for boys to learn skills and feel like they are a part of something bigger then themselves. Hopefully they get out of it that service, skill and focus can get you through anything. I'm an Eagle Scout and my 12 year old just got into Scouting. He seems to get into it and it keeps him out of video games. That alone is a win, but hopefully he gets out of it what Baden-Powell intended,
