Do you drive in 'D" or "4" around town?

    I know the manuel says "D" but I notice that at 35-40 the engine rpm's are only about 1,200. That almost seems like your bogging the engine? Seems to me 1,800 is a better when in "4". Any thoughts on this?

    Mine has plenty of low end grunt to still accelerate without downshifting at 35-40. As long as the torque converter isn't locked (which it won't be at these low speeds), bogging the engine isn't a concern IMO.

    EDIT: To answer your question, I always run mine in D unless I'm towing for long distance on highway.

    If your towing or hauling, otherwise keep it in D. You'll get worse gas mileage by keeping it revved higher.

    there's actually a thread on here that shows 4 actually improves mpg when driving around town, but not ny much

    Tried it and had the opposite affect... I did it for 3 tanks consistantly and averaged worse mileage on my daily commute (commuting in and out of Boston).

    4.56 gears, rear trutrac,DT header, 235/85r16 Duratracs, 2nd filter pulled, inter.wipers, Cruise control, Factory alum. whls/winter tires(2nd set), Afe pro Dry-S , Dumbo eared flaps cut down.
    1 in front of busses,2 on sidewalks,3 in parking lots,4 in the swap meet....and its 5 not D on manuals dang you all, pfft.

    I use 4. Lower gearing than 5, especially for starts. Like said above, I am sure the gain in MPG if any is marginal. I use it because of the 33's, and 3", just my preference.

    The engine isn't bogging. If the engine begins to see load, the transmission will downshift to an appropriate gear.

    Because it's there primary for security reason. If you no longer have brakes, you can engine brake the truck. I think it's even written in the manual.
