The knurled section of the lug was just a bit too long on mine also. Thru them on the lathe and machined it down so they were flush with the hub.

Someone knock on wood, but ain’t no way this new 4L80E is overheating now. Jumped from 6an to 8an lines, and added a second cooler. 260,000 BTU’s of heat extraction. Also have an improved racing thermostat on there so in the winter time, my trans will actually reach operating temp.

I don’t have a ton of experience with these thermostats. However I do know they are the leading killer of 68RFE’s. Hopefully it doesn’t completely bypass the cooler or you have some sort of trans temp alert.

Nope, in its “fully closed” temp, it still flows 10% thru the cooler. Prevents temperature shocking and aeration. It starts to open at 165 and is fully open at 185. The Holley has a transmission temp gauge with different alert settings so we’re good there.

improved racing is probably the best bar none in fluid control devices. I’m not really concerned about it sticking shut or anything.

Ok, as long as you have an alert if temps start to climb. You should be fine. After some of the 68’s I’ve replaced I’m super paranoid about something restricting flow in a trans cooler.

Yeah in either the open or closed or partially open, there is still 100% flow. Even if it failed, I’d have minimum 10% flow through the cooler, and 90% flow bypassing the cooler back to my trans.

Why not just manage the fan operation? Especially when the cooler location does not appear to have airflow from truck movement.

Because the passive cooling ability of those coolers is still massive. I don’t think it would ever reach operating temp if I didn’t have a thermostat. Every OEM has a thermostat on their trans cooler loops.

I still am managing the trans cooler fans electronically.

Every OEM has a thermostat on their trans cooler loop? Since when? If so, why did you need to add one?

Because my truck is probably the farthest thing from OEM you can imagine.

and yeah, even the Tacoma’s have a trans cooler thermostat if I’m not mistaken. I had a stick shift trans before I did the swap so I’m not 100% sure.

New hanger/location complete. Cycling an HONEST 19” full droop to bump. Still looks like 18 is the number strapped. But either way. 4” gain and significant improvements in overall geometry. 14” shock will cycle this in the JD position. To think I started with 15.125” unstrapped.

Still the JD shackle. Utilized as much as I could from what I had.

Trans thermostats are few and far between. Many vehicles still utilize the radiator for a trans cooler. So as you can imagine, in a sense acts as a cooler and a warmer. Thermostats are scary. Just how I feel about it. One hiccup and your 200$ part roasted a 6,000$ trans. Letting it warm up on its own is something you should do for the entire driveline anyways.

Even radiator transmission coolers have thermostats too. I haven’t seen one, at least not in my experience, without one.

Regardless, I’m always keeping an eye on it so

I’ve seen thousands without. 68RFE’s for sure have one and they kill a trans in a split second. Doesn’t even have time to hit limp mode.

If you’re cool with it, that’s all that matters. But undoubtedly it is one more failure point. Not trying to rag on you for having one. But they aren’t always fool proof.

Nothing ever is with these things. You wouldn’t believe how close of an eye I keep over all the diagnostic data the Holley gives me. Been watching fuel trim, afr, oil pressure, coolant temp, trans temp, trans pressure, probably more than I’m watching the road while I’m driving. I’m paranoid

Automatic Tacomas don’t have a transmission thermostat. Well, the 3rd gens do, but not 2nd gen or earlier.
are your 14’s still under the bed or through it?

Found this - thought I had lost it but interesting to see if it fits what’s going on here with @906taco ’s new setup.
