Hey all, ive got a 2023 sr5 4x4. I Changed my oil for the first time myself today at 16000 mi. There seemed to be alot of metal shavings in the dirty oil... how much is too much and should I be concerned?

I find it alarming for such a new vehicle.. but if i may ask.. why did you wait for 16k miles to do your first oil change?

Additionally, i assume you bought this car new? No Toyota Care for the first 2 years 25k miles?

Sorry I should have been more detailed. I've been going to the dealer for services and oil changes. At the 15k service, I asked them to do an oil change and they didnt... I was pissed but needed to leave so I decided I'd do it on my own.

If you have the oil filter cut it open with a hack saw and check the filter media for more metal shavings . If you see a noticeable amount of shavings go to your local dealer and show them

That seems to be a lot of metal. Especially those large chunks. I would be concerned if I saw that.

If this is your first oil change then give it another two or so before you judge. That's break in debris.

Totally normal to have shavings on the first oil change. I did the first change on one of my vehicles at 2000 miles and it looked 10x worse than that. Had very little issues with it over the 15 years I had it.

Can't say one way or the other looking at pictures like this. Get a sample tested at Blackstone if you're concerned. You still have 44000 miles to figure this out :cookiemonster:

If the dealer has been servicing the truck, you've only had one oil change. They only provide them at 10k mile intervals. Although alarming, the metal shavings isn't out of the ordinary.

I did my own oil changes early and frequently to get that out.

Echoing what others have said, shavings during the first oil change are normal since the engine needs to break in. I’d drive it for a few hundred miles with the new oil, then change it again. If there’s still shavings, take it to the dealer (since I’m assuming it’s under warranty) or send a sample to Blackstone so they can see what the metal is from

Are you sure the dealer did the oil change like they said? I would look at the dipstick before and after a dealer oil change and can tell a difference in color. Here is the Blackstone link if you are interested.

Yes..adding on, wipe the dipstick with white paper towel each time, the color difference will show up much more.

Wait, is that on the bottom of the pan? How many miles on that oil becasue that is some clean ass oil? I can never see the bottom of my pan at an oil change and I do mine at 6500 Blackstone will give you the deal but you real have to take the sample midstream on a warmed up truck. Maybe wait until next change for a sample

If those came from the filter, I would question if they changed the filter at the 10k OCI. If those came from the oil that drained directly into the pan, then I wonder if they changed anything at all.

I'm only at 7500 miles on my '23, and I did my own change at 5k. There were a few smaller metal particles in the oil, but nothing quite as big as those circled in post #14.
