Are you saying it's #10-32 and not 3/8-32? That doesn't sound right. #10 is tiny

I just use my tools, I don't make the rules :notsure:

Why not just buy a new torch especially if it's years old? You know you can just use your existing connector (especially if it's a common dinse connector) to any new torch right?

Think of it as replacing the terminals on your car's wiring to the battery.

I remember looking at that same drawing! LOL. I was pretty sure it was bullshit. Some intern grabbed the cad file and made a drawering... forgot about tolerances, manufacturing process, you know... the real world!

But really, this is one of my pet peeves. C'mon Baja, who makes a bolt pattern 3.231 by 1.855"? Like I'm going to center punch my bumper to a thmousandth! I can't even see the 64th divisions on my ruler! "now shcribe a line at 173/127ths of an imch and place your center mark there" Why not throw us a bone and round up 19 or 20 thou to make it 3-1/4 x 1-7/8ths? Or pick your favorite unit (mm? fathoms? bozacks?) but make it a ROUND NUMBER! FFS! We're all busy people here! We don't have time for your .231"!

    Good rule of thumb tho: if the drawing has a dimension X.X, assume +/- 0.020, X.XX, +/- 0.010 and X.XXX, +/- 0.005".

Oh trust me, I'm familiar with all the AWS symbols having followed many blueprints for stuff we manufactured. You had to as a welder as each welder got a set of plans, and you'd grab a forklift and bring the pallet of parts to your work station.

Everything was already cut and bent, but the tolerances were stated as far as how square things had to be and what was "within range" whether it was stainless (tighter tolerance, no powder coat) or mild (powdercoat received). That was normally within 1/16" on say an 8' assembly.

But yeah it did bug me mainly because my friend sent me that diagram a week prior to ordering the lights, so I drew up and cut out the design.

Like you said, the design called for a 9 thousandths of an inch so I opted to go 1 hundredth of an inch larger (for a respectable tolerance) and nope...

It's the powdercoat they add on though, that's why it's much thicker. Wish I had looked the lights up cause I would've refrained from cutting anything out knowing I'd have to account for the powdercoat thickness.

A shame I'll have to ruin these buttery smooth cuts simply to enlarge it by two hundredths of an inch -

    @Baja Designs

for what they cost, this shouldn't be an issue!

better to grab harbor freight lights, and expect a tolerance mis-match than pay for wualitee, and end up under-sized!

    In summary, yes

When you asked months back about welding, this is what I suggested you do when I said perform a bend test

When we did 3G and 4G tests, you bevel and place a landing on the pieces to be welded

You run your root, hot, and cover passes

Rear must be completely filled or not to exceed 1/8" and same with the top

Cut a portion out and toss it in the press

    If it breaks, you fail

    If it bends, you pass

Some welding shops will have you perform a test right then and there as part of the hiring process, but in general the shops I've either worked at or applied for all had me do a welding test

Some being the very test @allenfab posted

The one I hated and didn't expect was welding some super thin galvanized; it was this large company that manufactured large refrigerated coolers for industrial applications

I passed, was offered great pay, but it was an hour drive so passsss

    Right

It's not my bumper or lights, but I'll definitely have to request the lights to be in my hands next time anyone wants something cut out

That or an accurate measurement of said item

I've used Diode Dynamics before on my last rig and they were bright AF

Might use them again if I ever find the need, they gave me a military discount too

Haven't welded in awhile; I don't consider the other day's exhaust hanger bracket or anything as real welding but here's the LC I did 2 days ago

out of curiousity, what is your preferred torch movement pattern?

we got into a brief discussion about it at work.. most people either zigzag, wiggle side to side, or make circles, one of the guy's uses a pull back, push forward half" technique, and i recently learned of the 'e' pattern as well(come down the middle, make a circle, repeat)...

Push, slight pull back, push, slight pull back in this setup

You are supposed to be getting more heat/penetration as you push vs pull

Then again I'm only a hobbyist!

no judgement! my favorite part of admitting i don't know any better is learning different techniques!
