Okay... story time.

I pulled up alongside a brand new Hemi Cuda, the sticker still in the side window. It was 1973 and we were dragging State Street. We were not first at the light, but just behind. The Cuda was beautiful, and the kid driving it was excited and proud of his new ride. I was driving my bright yellow '72 Honda 600 Coupe with a couple of friends on board. The Honda exhaust had developed a hole and had some volume. I revved it up and popped the clutch, squealing the tires. All 30 horsepower of my two cylinder, air cooled monster throbbing for a race. The guy in the Cuda laughed and the kids in his car egged him on. He revved his new ride... and his foot slipped off the clutch. The car lurched and smacked the bumper of the car in front of him. The light had already changed and I was gone as the doors of the car ahead of the Cuda opened...

 

Ha… I didn’t even realize my wheelbarrow was in the background. The Chevelle is a 1970.

 

I kinda knew the car as my wife’s grandpa built a pretty mean 70 chevelle years ago I got to see up close a bit..

If I’m correct grill/headlights on second gen changed each year? Only a 70 has that particular headlight and grill correct?

 

Correct. That grill and headlight combo was unique to the ‘70.

Now super performance makes an electric Cobra that is even quicker than the 427 gas. 1500 ft/lbs at rear wheels

Building the gas version was going to be my retirement project but with the advent of an electric model it changed all that.

What i wanted to build was the type 65 Daytona Coupe. Under the skin its a like the Cobra Kit so course was applicable to both models. Shelby only build 6 Daytona Coupes to compete in the 24 hrs of LeMans. The last original Daytona couple sold for over 6 million.

 

My brother has talked a lot about building one, but I suspect he's past it by now. When he was running around with C Van Tune and running the Cannonball, they talked a lot with Shelby and Yates and others and this particular car was the subject of many conversations. You mentioned the value of the one sold and it always makes me wonder what my brother's car is worth. Lot's of magazine articles and a survivor of the Cannonball, but does that really make it more valuable? I guess only a bidding situation would ever tell us.
