MPG is very hard to compare because so many factors influence it..

Vehicle weight, wheel size/weight, tire size/weight/type, tire pressure, engine tuning, amount of lift, gearing, add-ons that increase or reduce aerodynamic drag, local weather conditions, net increase or decrease in total slope, driving surface type & roughness, motor oil viscosity, overall maintenance status/health of the engine and the drivetrain, driving style, fuel quality/octane/seasonal blend..

    ------

At ~57 mph on the cruise control in 6th gear on the flat, dropping to 50mph in 5th gear on steeper hills, over mixed flat-to-hilly terrain on open highway in northern california, at daytime ambient temps in the 60's, with a variable tail & headwind of ~10 to 25 mph, using 87 octane COSTCO gas, in my well-maintained stock-engine (no boost) 2014 4.0L, with P265/70/R16 Yokohama Geolandar tires at ~30 PSI on stock 16" alloy rims -- with around ?? 900 lbs of extra garbage affixed to the truck (ARB bumper, ARE utility cap, lumber rack, tools, extra fuel, and myself) -- I recently clocked a legit 18.1 MPG over a ~140 mile round-trip. This is very good compared to my average of around 14-15 mpg, driving a less-disciplined 63-65mph.

And/or, maybe it's just that COSTCO has switched to summer-blend gas that burns better.

The recent rise in prices has me slowing down a bit and even carrying heavy loads and stuff on the cap rack I’ve managed 8 straight tanks 24-25mpg. The current tank will be the first over that stretch with only a moderate load(less than 750lbs) and just crossed the 1/2 tank mark at 280 miles so we’ll see how it goes. 5-lug 2.7L 5sp manual stock tires & wheels no lift other than maybe a 1” boost from air bags.

Yes, I've noticed this effect esp. out here in CA where even with a COSTCO discount we are paying $5.25 a gallon for 87 octane. The right/slow lane is now typically at 58-60mph, whereas it used to be much more like 65-68mph when prices were below $4/gallon.

Except when people do 85 passing on the right because someone else isn’t going fast enough.

As the op question was very non spacific in the acual question. Even referring to his mpg as miles per tank. Miles per tank has huge variables and is not even close to being a specific mpg measurement.

In watching this post I've noticed that mpg varies greatly for basically the same truck. Seems some are normal around 15mpg and others mid 20's? The main difference must be in the drivetrain and or year.

Not my thread but I woukd still like to suggest that the new post include spacifics like
1)Year, Model, drive train. Example: 2008 extracab, 4.0 v6/5 sp manual
    2) mpg, was it from gauge computor or an acual pen and paper calculation
    3) type of driving. Example; 50/50 city/hywy, flat land

    My personal example
    1) 2008 2nd gen, xrunner extra cab 4.0/6 speed manual, 130k
    2) 15mpg ish. hand calculated
    3) low use vehicle, mostly around town, flat land

Really loving my 2013 base (2WD) - stock everything with my average in the high 24mpg to high 25mpg (depending on winter/summer) - manually calculated at each fill up so I can monitor for potential problems.

Not as good as my old 2006 Ranger, but the engine was a little smaller, and it was a 5 speed manual. The Ranger averaged high 26mpg through mid 27mpg, with an occasional 29ish mpg.

I don’t even know why mpg is a discussion for Tacoma’s. We all know it guzzles gas especially when modified. When towing, forget about it. Just throw your $$$ at her and enjoy the show.
