I do it all the time. There is a bit of difference in the deposit of weld media, but I have no worries about its shear strength.

In a pinch, no issues, but I'd rather run bimix for everyday MIG welding.

I look at it the same way peeps used coat hangers to oxy weld back in the day. It looked pretty rough, but it got the job done.

Straight Argon vs Argon/carbon dioxide isn't going to make that much of a difference beyond appearance.

Granted, if your customer specs a specific gas, you gonnq use that gas and they going to pay for it.

Random shit around our shops, the cover gas isn't really gonna make that much of a difference.

Granted all these other gas mixes have only come to fruition over the last few decades, it's been shown that it's more than just appearance that makes the difference

The biggest one being thermal conductivity

Learned a lot about it in welding school, and before you say it, yes school vs application blah blah but in the work place, you won't find any shops specifically MIG welding with straight argon as it'll either be 75/25 or straight co2

Argon alone won't provide the strength the other two mentioned gases would, hence my 'brittle' comment

Even my instructor (who has been welding for over 30 years) took a bit to grasp the changes in what became "the standard" cause like you, back in the day argon would've been used for MIG but not in modern day

Reminds me, I still need to get my free gas refill!

I've got a tank sitting empty in the corner of the garage; only cause the one I'm using is nearly full :boink:

... both hands both out of position haha - not a chance for me. I get a fraction of the hood time and I need all I can to continue getting better with my good hand while in position. I love the setup of those anchor points. I have some mounting plates to build a rear bumper. I've been looking at those 1 piece 1" x 5" clevis / shackle mounts but now I think i'll sandwich a few plates directly off the bumper plates like you have.

Are each of those 1/4" so you're at 3/4" sandwiched together? Also - maybe I missed it from earlier pics.

Oh you owe it to yourself to use your weak hand! I did it a lot for shooting whether pistol or long range rifle so it made it easy when applying it to welding

As for the mounts, yeah it's all 3/16" plate so it'll bring it to 9/16"

It's what Coastal Offroad does and it's a solid mount seeing as how it uses the frame mount as part of that recovery point

I do have a set of extra recovery points being unused but if I were to make another one of these bumpers, I'd want to make it all the same again

Only difference is I made the inner/outer mounts extend much farther so there's more surface area to weld to

When the front face gets welded on, the front part of the recovery mount will also get welded to that face just like most standard mounts

    Best tip?

    Time under the hood

Next time, run it hotter as you can see the bottom plate is really thick as is the corner of the tube. It sapped the heat out laying it a tad cold, otherwise it looks nicely fused!
