Well gents, I’m moving across the country from GA to CA. I’m looking for some recommendations of decent towns to potentially stop in between Houston and San Antonio where my truck/U-Haul won’t be broken into.

Looking to knock out 10-12 hours the first day, which would put me just west of Houston. I know Houston is a big city and I’m sure it has its nice parts, I just don’t know where they are.

Would anyone be kind enough to offer recommendations?

I'd suggest a smaller town a 50-100mi away from any metro area. Around here (Abq metro) they like to steal the person's car/truck and their trailer containing everything they own. 50mi down the road it's not near the same risk.

The Woodlands is an upscale suburb just north of Houston and I-45 cuts right through. The town is nice and safe. Plenty of places to eat (all price ranges) and you can stop by the Ferrari dealership to see how the other half shops.

Colombus, Schulenburg on I 10 west of Houston is ok if you get past San Antonio, Kerrville is a very nice place and there will not be traffic past San Antonio till you get to El Paso

Sadly Albuquerque does have a problem with theft and I think some have gotten the idea that people moving are easy targets. I agree with “ridefreak” that staying out of the big cities is probably safer. Edgewood is a little town 30 miles east of Albuquerque and Grants is a midsized town to the west of Albuquerque, both I think would be better choices if you choose New Mexico to stay in. Good luck with your move!

West Houston is generally pretty safe the further west you go. The east side is sketchy. If I were you, I’d look for a rest stop around Katy.

Thanks for the recommendations! After that I think I’ll be safe to stay on Fort Bliss and then finish the rest of the drive to CA.

I have driven from CA to TX and back about 4-5 times now. We always drive straight through NM.

Ended up staying in Katy and El Paso (aboard Fort Bliss). Trip completed and my U-Haul was safe. Thanks for the help guys!
