I like the shotgun idea
And Maryland is unfortunately not gun friendly... at all.
Getting a handgun permit is difficult, and even transporting one in your car lays you open to the cops giving you a hard time.
A cop that wants to be a hardass can cause you big trouble.
You gotta have it in a locked case, IIRC, ammo separate, blah blah... unless you got a permit.

People tend to overestimate this.

Having shot competition trap for many years, I know this very well.
Every now and then, someone (usually a beginner) lets off an accidental discharge and smacks the back of the trap house.
From the 16 yard station, it's about 14 yards to the back of the trap house.
You can easily cover the pattern with a paper plate.

Now, from 20 yards and up, the pattern does open rapidly.
I've patterned most shot sizes at the range, and the differences aren't much.

 

The others are more expert on the weapons. I myself just got a good used 9mm from a pawn shop because it was cheap and easy to conceal when traveling. My other penny pinching security idea was my chihuahua. She lets me know if a raccoon farts a mile away. It can be annoying when it’s a false alarm but someday it could be a real threat so I don’t ignore her. She is also a good little friend.

 

Might I respectfully request that you set your budget to at least $500. Just my opinion, not that it matters.

 

There's a shop that opened recently around the corner from here. I been thinking about checking it out and asking em a bunch of my questions there. Some of our neighbors would also know a good bit about it, but most of em I haven't talked to much before.
