If they were smaller to be captured by the filter, you won't be able see them.

Very doubtful they have been circulating in the oil, doesn't work like that, the oil pickup doesn't pull from the bottom of the pan for that specific reason, also those most certainty would get captured by the filter. Do you think the filter is actually that in-effective, if it was there's not much reason for having it. Automotive oil filters are filtering down to 25~30 microns, those are about 100x that size.

This leads to the question, where is the oil filter in the oil circulation circuit ?

That's not true. Dealership never change oil at 5k, unless you pay for it. They change oil at 10k , only if you take it there at 10k maintenance schedule. Let's say you miss your 10k or 6 month appointment, but you attend your next appointment after, there will be no oil change , just some other BS , like tire rotations, part safety . Ask me how I know?

You have Toyotacare. It comes with the purchase of the truck... Toyotacare is the free oil changes you get.

Oh, but it is true, and it's not even uncommon.
Simply dependent on the dealer at hand.

On a wet sump engine (ours) it's typically right after after the oil pump, if it has an oil cooler it passes through the cooler before the filter in most cases.

Goes from the pickup to the oil pump then the cooler if there's one then on to the filter followed by the bearings and other items requiring oil lubrication. It's considered the pressurized side, return side uses gravity to flow back into the pan where it starts over.

Your invoice from dealer really showed that they did engine oil and filter change for free? Apparently, whoever owns your Toyota dealership is different from the rest.;)

The writer told me they would just use it as one of the free oil changes.

I don't think dealers can charge toyota corporate for oil change at the wrong interval since mileage needs to be reported. make sure they have the correct miles written on the sheet otherwise your service record will be off. There is also a chance that they forget to put your service into the system (which i find rare) so when you go back 5k miles later, they assume you still need one? Just thinking of scenarios.. but i believe corporate won't pay dealers since they have those requirements.

Truck service history per the Toyota web site. Toyota paid for the first 2 oil changes, and I paid for the 3rd. Next oil change I will still get a free tire rotation. Dealer said I could use the oil changes and tire rotation whenever I want as long as it's before the date and milage limit.

i admit, i changed my oil last weekend, and panicked a bit when i saw it look like gold dust in the bottom of the pan.

then i remembered that i've been cutting, grinding and welding in the same garage for the past year, and never cleaned the pan before using it for oil.

I tend to air on the side of never cleaning my pan so I know not to look in it as a guy could easily create panic for himself by trying to read the tea leafs of engine health by looking at used oil. A filter, maybe but even then I'm of the mind set that unless your engine is knocking or has low oil pressure, it's fine.

Sure you could catch a problem earlier with consistent oil analysis but to me it's not worth the time and money. You'll know if you have an engine issue
