I shot a 12 gauge once in Virginia. It's been 10 plus years. I recall being rather startled by its force. :anonymous:

    YES

    BUT

Under this premise, a long time ago - I got an 870 20ga..
It is a bitch to find 20ga ammo much less 410 ammo
Plus your ammo options are severely limited
    So now I want a 12ga

Whatever she gets, she needs to learn how to use it and practice..
A gun is a tool and if you don't know how to use the tool correctly then WTF

I think most guns, if you aren't used to it, will startle you
It takes some time to adjust and get used to how they kick
Whatever you get, you need to practice and fire it until you are comfortable, then practice every so often so you don't forget

    12ga ammo is prolific
20ga you can find but there are limited options
410 is a PITA to find

I own a 20ga because I thought it would be easier to handle early on -
I don't wanna sell it because . . . . but I would rather have [and will buy] a 12ga because of the ammo; so many better/cheaper options

    Yes that too.

I took like a 10yr hiatus from firearms because of some medical shit
Before I started messing with them again, I took a gun safety course at a local range - it was a great experience and I am glad I did it

Have you considered getting a big dog? One that mostly stays in the house so an intruder can’t poison it. They are legal and have no qualms about biting a guys family jewelry to protect their family. Just a thought
