Oh, that's a good point. All multimillionaires are both always correct and always have my best interests in mind. Definitely not the most interested in self-promotion and furthering that wealth.

Anyone experimented with portable induction burners? I feel like with a beefy enough solar + bettry system, they could be a great way to cook instead of relying on combustion and its downsides.

Those extra peppers and onions and garlic etc can all be dehydrated and ground into powders too.

Tomato powder can be rehydrated into tomato paste or even ketchup.

Garlic and onion powder are self explanatory.

Jalapeños make a good addition to a BBQ rub, dried and smoked to make chipotles, also an excellent flavor for chicken and black beans etc.

We will use most anything. If lettuce is started to head south dehydrate it. Any vegetable gets ground into green powder and sprinkled over meals. When you dehydrate you retain all the nutrients. He’ll even the ends we snap off asparagus we dehydrate and bring into asparagus powder that’s a nice addition to a lot of things. We have very little waste

to answer your earlier question about fishing and having paracord. Yes I fish but very little mainly salt water but I have the ability in fresh water. Cordage of multiple types is not an issue I’ve squirreled that away for a long time very handy in many situations.

Never used a portable version, but my kitchen range is induction. It's fantastic, but getting pots and pans that work well has been trial and error. In a SHTF scenario I wouldn't want to screw with finding the right pots and pans.

Induction doesn't any provide power savings over a regular cheap resistive electric element, although induction is more efficient. A 1500w cooking surface is a 1500w cooking surface regardless of the heat delivery method.

I was thinking of it in a hunker down scenario- pans already in place. I think the draw for me is control, the ability of it to get more energy into the pan versus a regular stove, and it can run on 120v unlike a full size range.

I serviced my generator yesterday, good to go. Thunder storm/tornado season. My gasoline supply is okay, normally 25 gallons, down to 18ish. My wife and I could go about a month before things get sporty.

More efficient means less energy required to perform the same task. More of the 1500w of energy from the burner is going into the water (vs. heat lost to the environment).

Although both pull the same 12.5 amps, a more efficient stove would use fewer amp-hours from your battery to boil the same amount of water (e.g. run the burner for less time).

*Edited to be more general, since someone linked below that induction stoves are not inherently more efficient than conductive heating elements.

Speaking of water... you rain barrel guys: do you drink the rain water? And do you treat the stored water with chlorine or anything? Or treat it (chem, boil, or filter) when you drink it?

Not really true because there are a lot of variables (note that I mentioned pot and pan types).

    See:
    https://www.aceee.org/files/proceedings/2014/data/papers/9-702.pdf

The results of initial testing showed that conventional electric coil technology was
significantly more efficient (82%-83%) compared to the efficiency reports by DOE (74%). It is
theorized that this difference is due to the difference in the diameter of the cooking vessel, which
in this testing is large enough to completely cover the coil elements. Thus, testing was repeated
with a smaller cooking vessel to investigate the impact of vessel size on cooking output. This
testing (labeled “Small Vessel” in Table 2) made use of a 6” (15 cm), 1.5-quart (1.4 L) sauce pan
with a water load of 3 pounds (1.36 kg).
These results demonstrate that induction cooking is not necessarily more efficient than
conventional electric technology. In fact, the conventional electric coil was found to be 6% more
efficient than induction cooking when measured with the large cooking vessel. Yet the efficiency
of conventional technology was shown to be highly dependent on the size of the cookware used.
The full-power efficiency of conventional electric technology fell from 83% to 42% when testing
the electric coil with the small cooking vessel. This demonstrates the impact of contact area on
the efficiency of conductive heat transfer between the heating element and cooking vessel. When
operated with small cookware, a greater portion of heat created by conventional technologies is
radiated outward as losses. On the other hand, induction cooking was found to maintain high
    efficiency regardless of cookware size.

I'm posting so I can get some good ideas. I currently work have a year's food supply per person, iodine tablets, copious amounts of alcohol for trading etc, honey, spices. I also have a Kelly kettle to cook one as well as ferro rods to light fires. I've got a natural spring on the property for water...thinking of setting a Sandpoint on it.

EDIT: I've also established several fruit trees for an ongoing supply if shtf.

If you would came back here after listening to the podcast and said I think that dude's an idiot, then fine, a person would have to respect your opinion. But to just make disparaging comments about the guy having not listened to what he had to say doesn't put you in the best light IMO. So he did mushrooms. Listening to these podcasts apparently a lot of very well respected and highly intelligent people have also. They insist that they lead to a certain enlightenment. If that's the case I would argue that no small amount of the posters I've ran across while on TW could benefit from copious amounts of shrooms.

The rain water I harvest is only used for watering plants and flushing toilets. I guess it could be purified but I haven’t looked into that

Alrighty then. I’ve seen this tooooo many times here on TW. While I respect we each have our own opinions , it’s a free country, what I don’t want are arguments in here. Period. I’m nobody to you so no I can’t and won’t tell you what to do but I don’t care for arguments in here. Diffein opinion fine I get it but take it elsewhere PM. Phone call, or the parking lot I couldn’t give 2 shits where but not in here. I’m still trying to be polite and respectful I’d ask you respect that. There have been some really good discussions so far let’s not F it up

Also, there's potential disasters anywhere you go. Country? Backup power if the lines go down, or if a road gets cut from landslides or flooding or whatever. If it's widespread enough, you're on the bottom of the priority list anyway. NYC? Hurricanes, potential east coast earthquakes...

I'd say, instead of kits, think about backups. You don't need a stash of a years worth of food, you make your pantry bigger than usual and keep it all in rotation. Power out cooking? Outdoors gear, at least for a little bit. Or if you have solar, induction plates and the like. 'Go bag', in case you need to leave quickly. Couple essentials in the truck that'll also serve you in case you get stuck in the woods because a tree fell you couldn't move or a road washed out while you were out. Maybe a 'on foot bag'.
