I know right. Plenty of videos on that fact. How many parts needed to be replaced before it hit 100k miles.

I just traded my tundra at 170K, with zero, I mean no failures of any kind. My wife's Rav4 went 200, zero issues. I just bought a 24 at MSRP. I'm hoping for the same, not trading until 200K

Could be a combination of uncertainty about the new drivetrain, high prices, and high interest rates.

I hope that 4Runner and Landcruiser sales suck also, so I can get a huge discount on one once all of the people who need to have it right away are done paying mark-ups.

I'm not buying a 4th gen until the dealer throws in a new Corolla for a $1.00 and the Tacoma has to be under invoice.

The small hubs on the 4th gen could be a factor. I doubt if it makes a difference for most folks or an overall difference in how the vehicle drives. Less carryover from the aftermarket between 1st-3rd gen than between GAF and previous trucks.

My take is it's mostly market factors, and all of America has stocked up on Toyota trucks over the past 5 years.

I'd be curious to see how many folks in the market for a Taco are after it because of the off-road life and are paying attention to those mechanical features, and how many are basic suburbia dwellers just looking for a mid sized because they think its more efficient. I would assume the later is the larger market, and we TW folk just don't see it because we don't fall into that category as much.

I think it's prices that are turning people away, and mostly the monthly payment vs MSRP. I've had a lot of family and friends come to me with sticker shock after seeing the price. I don't think, at least for the majority of the market, that people care if it has a V6 or a turbo 4. Most probably don't know the difference TBH. I think "most" shoppers these days pay little attention to mechanical or powertrain features, all they care about is standard safety features and if it has CarPlay.

Something I am noticing is that I am not seeing red, blue, solar, or bronze colors sitting on lots. All the ones I am seeing sitting on lots are black, ice, silver, and underground and most of them are SR5s or stripped out OR and Sports.

The few dealers around me only have a few on the lot. Even the higher volume dealers.

With little options to choose from and trucks bloated with add-ons, I'm not surprised if they aren't selling well.

If I was going to spend 50k with a high interest rate, the truck better be pretty damn close to exactly what I want.

Other issue is, for 50k you can get a decent full-size truck.

Marketing tactics. Blast that you have an overstock so you're going to be slashing prices to bring buyers in. If buyers think they are getting a great deal they are more likely to go through with the sale, even if it's really not that great of a deal. Especially in this day, because the majority of shoppers are dumb and don't do their research to know what the market is currently at.

Black Friday is a great example of this. "Black Friday prices up to 50% off!!!!" Little do buyers know that 50% off is off MSRP, not the listing price. It's probably $5 off listing price.

That and interest rates. I'd also argue the other manufacturers have made very compelling products to strongly consider as well.

F150 XLT 4x4 54k on the ford build site today. Nothing else picked, just a bog standard F150 XLT 4x4.

    SR5 4x4 same idea. 41k.

13k difference, or 25% ish more for the F150 in the same "trim set" as the Tacoma. Not to mention the difference you'd see if you get to a Tundra vs. Tacoma (but I'd be in an F150 before a Tundra, so that's why I looked there) for Tundra $$$.

Full sizes went up too. It's not like the mid sizes went up and the full sizes stagnated. Trucks are more expensive now. Cars are more expensive now. Groceries are more expensive now.

(And to convert the above numbers in USD$ in 2019:
    54k was worth 44k in 2019
    41k was worth 33.4k in 2019

Thats where my comment on monthly payments comes in. Most folks make financial decisions these days based on monthly payments. They don't see a $50k the price tag, they see an $1100/mo payment. If it were $50k and $800/month payment they'd sign on the line and drive their new truck away.

Current economy doesn’t support financing new vehicles when there’s old ones at half (3/4?) the price, I reckon.
