just a couple of things tbh
I'm good on that lol spray paint can be done well for certain things but on a dirtbike that's going to get dropped because I still suck at off-road it's just gonna get destroyed and on dirtbikes plastics I'm still not s big fan of it tbh

I need to pick up a street legal dirt bike and gear to putt around on forest service roads in NW GA and SE TN, ride to the store and post office, etc.

My office is getting renovated so I will be working from home most of the summer, and we only have the Taco until next year because daughter wrecked her 4runner so we gave her my wife's car.

My son is giving me a nice ONeal helmet when we go visit AR & NM during June so ideally I need something like a KLX450 by June 10. Looking to spend about $4-5K total for
    • bike
    • boots 11
    • jacket 44
    • pants 33
    • aluminum hitch mounted carrier
Condition is not important if the bike will start and run clean. I have mechanic son and friends to work on it.

hmmm lots of options, but in that price range for all that is going to be tough as you are right on a tipping point. Not sure what availability is in your area but at that price its either a slightly smaller cc (250-300) mild fuel injected dual sport bike (KLX300 CRF300 n the like) or some sort of carbureted bigger single cylinder dual sport. Id lean to the smaller fuel injected bike. Though ZERO wrong with carbed bikes when maintained, ill say it again, love my lil ole xt225 it gets ridden the most days of the week. That XT225 will go anywhere and everywhere my fancy WR450 dirtbike will go off road (just slower)

Alright, I am getting closer n closer to putting my grom back to stock for selling. 2014 grom with a 164cc big bore kit, big valve head, cam, aftermarket ecu etc etc etc. Just not much in the way of bites even with offering to sell for $2500 I think the modded nature is turning people off which doesnt lend itself to selling on such a niche bike in the first place. Gonna drop advertised price to 2500 FIRM and if I dont get any bites / sale in the next week or two..... it will pain me.... but I will crack the perfectly good motor build (that hasnt had an issue in 6k miles since its build) and put it back to stock. Already have one individual interested in the big valve head over on hondagrom.net

I did an inventory on grom parts and I have the necessary gaskets to go back to stock already in my possession lol.... Head, base, exhaust gasket is all thats needed.

So if anyone here wants performance parts for a 2013-2020 grom (OG and SF 4 speeds) let me know. This might make the decision easier.

KLX300, CRF300L, XT250 or DRZ400 are the choices that make sense.

DRZ400 is a dinosaur but arguably the best all around.
CRF300 is most modern, soft sprung for offroad but great choice
XT250 is the entry level and cheapest, slowest
    KLX300 is a great 50:50 bike

Yeah I looked at all of those but the newer bikes are over my budget. I would go 250 as long as it has a dirt worthy suspension.

Im 6’1” 175 so I can ride a tall bike but I prefer it 250 lbs max.

I got my WR250R for 4500 from a buddy, they have crazy prices used here (canada) The WR is arguably the best offroad 250 street legal, but they are damn hard to find.

I've been pondering selling it and going to the honda and upgrading to my needs.

Oh yeah, looks like there are a few in my area on FB Marketplace. I had forgotten they made a 250 with lights a few years back.

For TW moto forum members..... price is significantly less on these wacky parts. What year grom do you have?

I was at a disadvantage to begin with on the grom.

It really is a niche bike.
So selling used with nearly 10k miles is harder than most as TECHNICALLY its not highway legal (CA requires 150cc to be highway legal)... which youd go OK well its 164cc's as it stands whats the problem? ...... TECHNICALLY illegal to mod ANYTHING motor related in CA for all intents and purposes *rolls eyes* but no cop has ever bothered me on the grom even on the freeway, hell I have had a few come up when stopped and go that things cool what is that! While in its current modded 164cc config it will do highway speeds without much issue. Given its small nature its just not stable at speeds above 55mph in any config, and doing 65mph on the highway is ringing its neck (72 indicated is like 9.5k rpms which is above it stock revlimiter of 9250 - aftermarket ecu will let it rev to 12k lol).

If anyone does a little bit of time researching the grom or any other "miniMOTO" as coined by honda.... its a bike for mainly a person who like myself 1. has multiple bikes that check the boxes for multiple realms of motorcycling and wants a "pit bike thats street legal" or 2. a much shorter than average n small person looking for a first bike to learn on who doesnt want to go much more than a few miles away from home.

So, finding that niche on niche moto loving person to buy not only a grom, but a modded one at that is few and far between and the person in the 2nd group doesnt want / cant deal with the few quirks of the modded setup (slightly finickey starting when cold, the need for premium fuel, the wrapping the brain around being modded)

Hence my reasoning to return to stock and sell for a similar or lower price - its the epitome of "aftermarket parts add nothing to the sale price". I knew this going into it so its no surprise. Part of me just wants to do it regardless to turn some wrenches for pleasure and see how the big bore kit has faired.

I also think a big factor right now outside of grom things is consumer sentiment that is 100% opposite of what the MSM is telling everyone.... the normal person as a whole across the board financially is struggling.

10 years ago I could afford to have a grom sit and only ride it a few times a year around my sub division, but now I'm stuck with a one bike garage. I get what you're saying.

I used to leave near a ruckus gang. Man was I envious of those kids.

2019. I bought mine to haul with me when I go glamping with the camper. Just saw your post over on hondagrom.net. $500 for everything is a killer deal! Unfortunately first big mods I want to do is suspension and rearsets

What kind of price on the head? Wouldn’t mind putting it on the monkey 143cc kit I have with the stock head.

Thats the other hold up. It costs me ~170/yr in insurance and registration to do nothing more than sit in my possession. Which isnt a whole lot in the big scheme of things over a year but still dollars burnt which are at a price premium these days.... But moreover it takes up valuable room in the single car garage I have as well as.... I HATE that it just sits and doesnt get used, I started riding the " I purchased this for the now EX GF" xt225 dual sport as my around town bike and the grom makes ZERO sense now as its damn near the same sizeish (like maybe a foot overall longer) but more suspensions WAY more stable, will do highway speeds without issue or struggle etc.

Will it fit the monkey? Not sure what year they changed to the 5 speed 125cc motor or what parts carry over, but im pretty sure if its a 4 speed honda grom / monkey motor it should fit though dont quote me on that.

Its a monkeyfather 27/23mm valved head that I got from "finbro" here in ca... then proceeded to take the time to port match to the throttle body and header, polished and opened up intake tracts, made valve sealing proper back in the day. OEM on the 4 speed motors I believe is 25.5mm Intake / 20.95mm, so a gain of 1.5mm and 2.05mm valve diameter.

    https://www.hondagrom.net/threads/finbro-superhead-quality-meh.35866/

If you can find em new they are around 250ish.... id do around 150, tho we can definitely discuss.

Suspension is the biggest thing you can do to any moto especially the grom!
