So I just changed my radiator and thermostat tonight, I let the car idle and it sits at its happy medium, but then I go for a drive and the gauge shoots up to hot. Any ideas why it could still be overheating?

When was the last time you had the water pump replaced? Usually done with a timing belt job.

Overheat snce last morning? What does that mean? Your description is Way to vague for more than guesses.

Was that before or after the radiator and thermostat?

Did you put a new radiator in or some junk yard used? Thermo in backwards? Was it properly bleed (air pocket)? Bad input = bad output.

If it overheated the same as you described before the new/used rad/thermo, then nothing was helped and the next would be to check the origanal over heat problem for an air pocket, blocked radiator, stuck thermostat, leaking head gasket. The only way a waterpump will cause an overheat is if it leaks the water out or if the metal impellors are rotted off (electrolysis) and thats rare.

If the overheat was after the rad and thermo you've obviously narrowed it down to those two related items. UNLESS you damaged something else along the way.in the parts change. There also could be head gasket type damage done depending on how hot and long you're truck (Tacoma isn't a car) got.

What others wrote. You remember to put coolant/antifreeze? But more importantly, has the cooling system ever been flushed out, and coolant/antifreeze replaced, before it started to first overheat? Engine oil turning white? Like ice cream?:D

What caused the need for a new radiator and thermostat?

OP, all the replies you have gotten are spot on. Provide more detail on why it is was replaced, what else was new (like the coolant) to make sure you did not forget that, and any parts installed back wards (like the Thermo) would effect it. Everyone is here to help but need more information.

Hello, sorry about to poor description. So 3 days ago I pull into my driveway and as I’m about to park my temp start to slowly climb so I just cut it and Parked. I already had a new radiator and thermostat (new coolant temp sensor and engine temp sensor) ready since I’m currently in process of replacing all the old sensors and junk. Replaced the water pump last month and no leaks. so I replaced the radiator and installed the thermostat (in the correct position) and no leaks in the radiator. So the issue begins here. The car can sit and idle all day and would sit and the temp it should. Driving the vehicle causes it to climb in temp. We spent around half an hour with the vehicle lifted upfront and burping with the big funnel. Massaging the hoses to try and help burp and bubbles still continued to come out. We have continued to try and burp the system and same results. No codes show up other than my exhaust that have been there since I got the car.

And if you look at edits, that info was added after my question.

And still no code. May not be related but then again.....

If it was low because of a leaking rad for a long period than its likely a headgasket failure, if not something worse.

You need to make sure the system is full after a cold night and maybe buy a headgasket leak detection kit.

It was a head gasket failure. Thank you to those who were kind/helpful. I appreciate all the input.

Ill bet the exhaust code was po420 or po430. This is common on Toyotas. Underperforming cat(s). Certainly look into this. Get rid of that code as this quite possibly contributed to hg failure
