This is a flouricane from last year. I trimmed out the old primacane. Got some good primacane growth coming in on a few plants.

Is it as bad as social media keeps saying it was going to be? They haven’t hit my area yet, but we do get them yearly. For some reason they dive bomb me while I’m on the riding mower cutting the lawn. I can’t tell if they think I’m a threat or if the vibration of the mower makes them think I’m their overlord ready to take them back to cicada heaven. Either way I’m not looking forward to their return and if it’s as bad as social media says it will be this year…. Well then I may just let the lawn grow wild this year.

On another note the swarm of termites is out. Always hate these couple weeks of the year where everything comes crawling out the ground ready to play…at the same time

It’s a constant drone of them here in upstate SC. Was down in Newberry and Greenwood this past week and it was twice as loud there. Lots of cicadas flying around. Have lived here my whole life, used to hearing the annual green type cicadas buzzing here during the hottest months but don’t recall this periodical type with a deeper droning sound. So I guess this is a heavy hatch. Was over at a neighbors doing some work the other day, mentioned the cicadas etc. He then said he wished he could figure out what machinery was running nearby making all that noise! lol! I said that’s what I just talked about, the cicadas!

Also, read and heard this is great for wildlife in some ways. A small black jitterbug is the ticket in the pond right now. You don’t even have to do more than cast it near the tree lines along the banks.

And to get back on topic, finally getting some more rain here. Been nursing my garden along and having to water it till now. Noticed squash bugs already on some plants which is very early for them to show up. Can only suspect it’s because it’s been so dry the last couple weeks. I inspected every plant and mashed the hell out of every bug. Best way to control them that I’ve found.

Interesting, as my red raspberries are also struggling mightily, however the black raspberries seem to be pretty normal so far.

Finally got some rain. Beans and corn about 3-4” tall now. Planted a few skips last eve, found seed germinated but not yet up on a bunch of seed holes I poked out. Lots of red clay soil here and it crusts some after a rain when dry. I put out gypsum every couple years to soften things. Anyway, about 90% on the seeded stuff and plants are doing well. Did find a set of hen tracks in the corn. She broke one sprout over. I hope she doesn’t force me to action.

When the primacanes are about 2.5 - 3'high do you pinch the top off so you get more branches to spread out?

Funny you said that as l went around the past couple days doing just that. Tried it on my black raspberries last year and it did work as many lateral branches grew.

Blueberries close already? Mine are formed but nowhere near ripening. They usually come in about June. Looking like a real good crop. Usually get around 5 gallons.
