Squirrel Damage

Two hits in a month! last time it was a Knock detection circuit they chomped through, this time, ignition coil circuitry. Seems to be running on between three and five cylinders. Will know more tomorrow. Apparently, these 4 litre models are much in favour with squirrels because the space between the V is a protected, warm home, after they have chewed out any wiring in their way. I've tried Irish Spring soap bars in the engine compartment, and they worked for a month. Poisons, traps and shooting are the next line of defence. I have never seen so many squirrels as this winter. Bastards. Any I catch will be "returned to nature." Yeah, right. My truck is parked on tarmac driveway, 150 feet from the road, in a bay surrounded by by rhododendrums.

 

Damm That really sucks ...Who would think one would have to worry about animals eating their trucks.

FYI if anyone didnt know but wiring on most vehicles nowadays is made with soy based materials which the rodents love to feast on. So if you have critters hanging around may want to get some sort of deterrant to try and keep them away.

 

if you use something big enough to shoot them they will explode! i suggest something like this, im sure you can rent one

 

Ouch, that's terrible about your truck being used as a squirrels nest.

I use a .22 magnum to keep the squirrel population in control around here.

Damn. I've seen a squirrel jump up on top of my tire and disappear inside a couple times in the past two weeks!! I'm going to set a rat trap tonight!!

 

I have a lot of experience trapping squirrels. go to your local Lowes or home depot and get a little humane trap made by Havahart. The squirrel will run in the cage, step on a level when it tries to get the bait and it will shut behind him. Then just fill a trashcan with some water and toss the cage in.

Use peanut butter, AKA squirrel crack.

 

My townhouse backs to a park woods and I have problems with these little bastards eating all the blueberries off my plants and breaking the branches. Luckily my Tacoma is parked on the other side of the house and the critters don't seem to go there. Due to my multi-family home situation I can't use any of the obvious lethal methods, and besides, there are probably too many to kill them all. I'd really like to make one of those you-tube squirrel launchers or somesuch but that would be frowned upon here, as would my 12-gauge. So I'd love to hear if anyone has found a decent way to repel them.

or if you are in a location that is lets say nof firearm friendly. A pellet rifle with a piece of that grey foam pipe insulation around the end is almost silent.

Not that I would know, but I heard this is particularly effective on college campuses, just make sure you are not shootign from a third story window and said squirrel drops in front of a campus tour - huh must have just decided to jump?

Shot one Monday & let it squeal in distress a while. It drew in Mama & I got her as well. They are being evicted from my attic. So far the damage to the house is just over $1200.

Get a garden hose and attach it to your exhaust, put the other end of the hose into the squirrel hole and leave the truck on for some time. That will put them to a permanent sleep. I guess you can call that "humane" since they won't suffer, just go to sleep
