This is for a 2010, but the 2009 should be the same or very close:

You need something to convert the 12 VDC of your truck to 6 VDC and you need a shielded cable with an RCA plug on one end.

Below and to the left of the steering wheel, there is a little hinged compartment. Open it fully, then pull it upwards and towards the rear of the truck to remove it. Now, you can see a fusebox.

(photo borrowed from a post by DNahas: http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/audio-video/30889-oem-camera-connection-below-dash.html Thanks, DNahas)

At the upper left of the fusebox, there should be two white plug/socket assemblies. Unplug the lower one (Factory Camera connector). It should have four wires connected to it.

    The wires are:
Black: +6 Volts DC supply to camera (connect to your 6 VDC source)
White: Camera video output shield (connect to the shield of your RCA plug cable)
Red: Camera video output (connect to the center of your RCA plug cable)
Taped: 6 VDC ground (connect to your 6 VDC source)

Your video quality will be better if you leave the Factory Camera connector unplugged. Be sure that you make your connections to the wires on the right side, not the socket on the left which is attached to the fusebox.

Now, look at the white plug/socket assembly at the upper left of the fusebox, above the Factory Camera connector. It's numbered like this, looking at it from the right side:

    1 5
    2 6
    3 7
    4 8

Pin 7 should have a red wire. Connect that red wire to the backup light input of your HU and the 12 VDC input of your 6 VDC source. Some trucks have another red wire, or a pink wire, on the same plug. Be sure that you connect to the right wire. The right wire should be at + 12 VDC when your backup lights are on, and 0 VDC when they are off.

Be sure to go into the menu of your HU and turn on the backup camera.

    Good luck.

    A couple of notes:

    1. DNahas connected his video shield to the taped wire instead of the white wire. If I had been in his position, I would have done the same thing. That's the way it normally would be wired, but Toyota didn't do it the normal way. He was working without the electrical wiring diagram, so he didn't know. It worked, but the video quality will be better if you use the white wire.

    2. I've read elsewhere on this forum that the backup light wire on the upper plug is pink, not red. Maybe it is on other trucks, but on the 2010, the backup light wire on pin 7 is red.

Here's how to build a 12 VDC to 6 VDC converter:
    http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/showthread.php?t=355342

If I was going to build it, I would turn the 7806 around in the heat sink and use some caulk to glue the wires/pins to the heat sink. Otherwise, normal truck vibration would break off the pins.

Also, I would put a fuse in series with the 12 VDC input. I would use the smallest value (1, 2, 3, or 5 Amp) that I could find locally.

I just made a voltage converter and connected everything. The camera turns on when in reverse, but no image! I checked the cam settings on the HU w/ no luck. Could it be possible that I previously fried the camera by using the d sub pin method w/o the voltage converter?

I'm glad I stumbled on this thread. I hooked up my aftermarket radio just as described and it worked great. I did have a hard time finding the reverse trigger in my truck. I have two red wires in the harness that has the reverse trigger. Took a bit but made it work. Thanks op and everyone else for your input.

I just made up my shielded RCA cable and am about to do this with my 2009 and my Kenwood head unit. I'll report back on how I do. Thank you. One thing I am going to look at though - I assume the head unit has a +6VDC output for the camera already, since it's "camera ready". I will look for that rather than build one, though building one is fine, too, if it comes to that.

OK - the head unit has a +5V usb output, but I realized that the power from the wire near the plug only comes on when the truck is in reverse, so you have to use that anyway - I ordered the parts from Digikey to make the 12/6 v converter. Thanks!

update - got my digikey parts, so hooray! Note - Crutchfield does not have a kit for this, nor do they sell an adapter cable, so DIY is the way to go. I'll take pics just in case it will help anyone.

Tell them what you have, and what you want to accomplish, they'll help you out.

First and foremost, see if your tailgate is even wired for the factory option. That will really be a game changer if so, and make this suck less.

I have a related but much stupider question along the same lines.

I bought a 2011 tacoma from my cousin at a good price. Part of the "good price", was she didn't have the OG tailgate, and as such got another one and never fully hooked up the back up camera. I decided now would be a great time to jump in and see what I could figure out.

    1. When you shift into reverse the screen in the rearview flashes on momentarily, but then turns off as there is no actual feed.

    2. Inside the tailgate the camera/ door handle side looks like this:
    IMG_7398.jpg
Camera attached to tailgate/doorhandle, and wiring that fits properly on camera end.

The issue is where the wiring connects from the tailgate to the truck bed. It looks like this (Black is truck bed, white is running out from tailgate):IMG_7403.jpgIMG_7404.jpg

Obviously these two parts do not fit together. The question is, does anyone know what this is supposed to look like? Is this the proper wiring harness leading from the tailgate side? From the Truck bed side? Can anyone tell me what's wrong with this picture, or where I might get some guidance? Really wanna fix this, but won't be spending hundreds of dollars on a new back up kit.

    Thanks
