2004 Tacoma Base or SR5?

I have a 2004 Tacoma 6 cylinder, 4 door, 4 wheel drive. The side badging says SR5 but the Title says Base. I'm confused. Thanks.

That's not correct for 1st gens. The SR5 packages (chrome and color-keyed) were an addon. For the purposes of titling (and going to auto parts stores), it is not a thing. You will typically only see base, limited, and s-runner as different options, as far as I know. Why this is the case, I don't know. Here is a copy of a 2004 brochure, if you want to read up.

So was limited the premium sort of package? And sr5 was just standard package?

 

Motor vehicle departments aren't going to distinguish different trim levels or anything, it wouldn't make sense to do so.

For instance a Corvette; title doesn't state if it's a Z06 or not nor does the other title state that it has the Z51 package.

Same goes for Tacomas with the TRD package or not.

 

Exactly. Also few care about what it states on the title.

I believe the SR5 may have had a towing package / upgraded shocks
Bought mine in like 2015 with SR5 badges and it came with chrome handles and hitch, but not sure what was from the dealer

 

According to the sales brochure I have (2014), the Class IV V6 optional tow package ($650) was available on the V6 4x4 Access Cab LB and the V6 4x4 Double Cab and included a Class IV receiver hitch, Transmission oil cooler(auto only), Engine Oil Cooler, HD 130 amp alternator, heavy duty battery, 7-pin connector w/converter and electronic trailer sway control.

 

This has always been confusing for me as well . . . technically mine is an '03, late quarter (December I think.) It may even be a limited. Color keyed but it does have power windows and mirrors, with diff lock, tow package, all the good stuff. The info in the '04 brochure seems a bit more robust than the '04 version (replace 4 with 3 in that link.) When I go to the Toyota owners site it says it has 60/40 front seat but it's definitely buckets.

 

It can really be confusing, for the record I purchased a new Xtra Cab 2003 4X4, MT, with the SR5 package, and the TRD Package.

I can only speak to the 2nd gen specs, but the SR5 Package in MY2014 was extensive, and included all of the items in the Convenience Package as well. Regardless of what the VIN returns on the Toyota owners website, a Tacoma SR5 was definitely not what anyone would consider a "Base" model. (IMO) It has a leather-wrapped steering wheel with controls and shift knob, Auto-Dim mirror with compass and outside temp reading, cruise, privacy glass, power outside mirrors, dual lighted vanity mirrors and a few other non-base features. They also sometimes add 'Extra Value discount packages to the mix during the year that are never listed on-line.

I recall SR5 was an options package on my 2002 prerunner, but it had black bumpers not painted or chrome. I miss those first gen prices though.

 

My 2002 has the SR5 pkg but it's chrome bumpers, chrome grill, black door handles and black fender flares (part of the TRD pkg).

 

Here is my 02 extra cab, 4wd, MT w/SR5 and TRD for comparison.

 

This is exactly what my 2004 Double cab has as well as 16 inch steel wheels.

 

I just downloaded the window sticker. It has an SR5 pkg which includes the following
1.) Stereo cassette and CD player
2.)Chrome grille and bumpers
3.)Tachometer
4.) Digital clock
5.)Visor extensions and mirrors
6.)A.C.
7.) SR5 badging.
Also has 16 x 7 steel wheels and sliding rear window

Price including shipping was $24,967
