First, you only get the full deduction if you use it 100% for business. Any personal use and you have to reduce that by the percentage of personal use. Second, you don't "write off" the $28,900. $28,900 is deducted from your income so you don't pay tax on $28,900. Third, you can only deduct $28,900 if you had more than $28,900 in business income. Assuming you only used the truck for business, you made at least $28,900 in business income, and depending on your tax bracket, you would "save" 10-24% of the 29K or 3-7K.

Correct, and most of the You tubers in question meet that requirement regarding business income and use...A lot of the YouTube video reviewers have a personal vehicle and the review vehicles are used for the business as you describe. (TFL comes to mind) but there are many others. And if they don't they are either not serious or don't know what they are doing when it comes to maximizing their profits.

There is also the depreciation deduction that may come into play as well.

It is safe to say that they are not loosing their shirts when they are in the business of reviewing autos by selling them quickly if they play their cards right with their accountant.

 

You did give me an idea though,...I think I'll open an LLC call it 365 days of driving and write of the depreciation on the vehicle every year...lol

 

Looking at Mark Brenner’s YouTube channel he had one video with 560k views, several with 100-200 views, and newer videos with only 3-6k views. Let’s say he has 1M views (per year). At .018 per view, that’s 18K.

 

He earns less than that from YouTube but who knows what other streams he may have...
