Yeah but I wasn’t referring to those as DRL’s.

Do you have Toyota Connected Services? The new trucks come with a year for free, then you can pay or not pay. One service is for safety and will call emergency services; another gives you the ability to see the status of your truck remotely (remote start from anywhere, lock/unlock doors, etc.). One of those may be snitching on you.
I kept the service active and both my app and my head unit have told me about the axle recall.

Since it was a used I didn’t get a year, but it was certified used so I got three months free. Once it was up I did pay so I could remote start and see its remote status. Does that automatically snitch to the dealer?

I do not pay for Connect Services, and explicitly told the people "turn off". My fob can still remote-start anyway ... probably because I never told the app (I never used the app) to stop. "Remote status" never interested me.

    YMMV

I'm not sure where the information goes. I have mixed feelings about the services as I like the features but don't need someone else tracking me. I'm apparently a sucker for my insurance company because, so far, I don't let them track me, and therefore pay higher rates. It seems like my 29-year clean driving record with them should be more useful than monitoring how I drive for setting my risk level.

I don’t let my insurance provider track me either.

The key fob communicates with the truck in a near range probably using RF. Connected Services communicates with the truck via the AT&T cellular network so you could theoretically start your car parked in AZ while you are vacationing in Thailand (but that would be silly). I have used mine on icy winter nights leaving events so that the car is somewhat warmed up when I get to it. But usually I completely forget I even have the feature until I open the car door.

In any case your fob will continue to work regardless of whether or not you have ever paid for the extras. You just have to be close enough and get the timing right on the button presses. Which is fine in most cases.

My impression from talking to them is thay are ALWAYS ready to take your money, as long as the truck has the hardware.

I renewed at $80/year for the Safety Connect and $80/year for the other stuff. You can also subscribe your truck to data so you have a rolling hotspot. If I worked out of my truck I'd do that, but since I work in my basement I don't. They probably have plans for other fancy stuff like navi but I usually know where I'm going (my wife may disagree) or use my phone.

    Connected Services (toyota.com)

SiriusXM is a whole different game. They will not let go of you and will track you to the ends of the earth, and probably to the center of it too. I ignore their pleas for my wife's car but enjoy it for me. You just call them and ask for a better deal and they'll give it to you. But it's like cable; you have to call back each year and ask for it again. I'm on the $5.99/month plan ($7.60 w/ taxes and fees) and I get that much enjoyment out of it. Each day it's a different deal so YMMV.
If you have 2 cars, you can get the SXM subscription for one and use the app for the other one (streaming). However streaming doesn't work when you're camping/fishing/exploring but those satellites keep pumping out the music.
