I'm not sure where the information goes. I have mixed feelings about the services as I like the features but don't need someone else tracking me. I'm apparently a sucker for my insurance company because, so far, I don't let them track me, and therefore pay higher rates. It seems like my 29-year clean driving record with them should be more useful than monitoring how I drive for setting my risk level.

The key fob communicates with the truck in a near range probably using RF. Connected Services communicates with the truck via the AT&T cellular network so you could theoretically start your car parked in AZ while you are vacationing in Thailand (but that would be silly). I have used mine on icy winter nights leaving events so that the car is somewhat warmed up when I get to it. But usually I completely forget I even have the feature until I open the car door.

In any case your fob will continue to work regardless of whether or not you have ever paid for the extras. You just have to be close enough and get the timing right on the button presses. Which is fine in most cases.

My impression from talking to them is thay are ALWAYS ready to take your money, as long as the truck has the hardware.

I renewed at $80/year for the Safety Connect and $80/year for the other stuff. You can also subscribe your truck to data so you have a rolling hotspot. If I worked out of my truck I'd do that, but since I work in my basement I don't. They probably have plans for other fancy stuff like navi but I usually know where I'm going (my wife may disagree) or use my phone.

    Connected Services (toyota.com)

SiriusXM is a whole different game. They will not let go of you and will track you to the ends of the earth, and probably to the center of it too. I ignore their pleas for my wife's car but enjoy it for me. You just call them and ask for a better deal and they'll give it to you. But it's like cable; you have to call back each year and ask for it again. I'm on the $5.99/month plan ($7.60 w/ taxes and fees) and I get that much enjoyment out of it. Each day it's a different deal so YMMV.
If you have 2 cars, you can get the SXM subscription for one and use the app for the other one (streaming). However streaming doesn't work when you're camping/fishing/exploring but those satellites keep pumping out the music.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but the D in DRL is for daytime, thus they go off when the headlights come on.

Hope ya’ll like the end product as much as i do.

Went to my first Rigs & Coffee event hosted by Goliath Offroad. Somehow took home two awards, best overall & Most Abused. Proud of the most abused.

Two words: Utility Trailer. You are right. My 5' bed is just about totally worthless. It is my one major gripe about my Taco.

I agree not isolated. My oem battery died at 3 years, never had that issue before with a new car.

Saw an interesting video the other day (The Car Care Nut) explaining the difference between spin-on type oil filter and cartridge type like the 3rd Gen Taco. One of the major differences is on the cartridge type the bypass mechanism is in the filter housing (the plastic part that holds the filter element) and not in the filter itself like the spin on type. For this reason he suggest bypassing the step of draining the filter housing first as sticking the drain 'nipple' into the housing could damage the bypass mechanism over time. I've read in this forum of folks changing oil by just removing the whole housing without draining it first as a time saver and not any messier than the filter draining method, maybe even less of a mess. Not possibly damaging the bypass valve is worth thinking about.
