So I was here tonight.

 

I slept like a baby
Which is to say, I woke every couple hours, took a leak, and disturbed the kitty cats.

Story Time with Gritto

We don't get many for-real tornadoes here... too mountainous.
Though there have been a few bigguns in the extreme western part of the state where it's flatter.

Anyway, there was one here that was memorable.

It had been an oppressively hot and humid day in late Spring, 20 odd years ago.
There were tornado warnings that evening
Yeah right, we've heard that one before and nothing much ever happens.
Until this time.

It was the blackest, wildest night I can remember.
Heavy rain squalls, high winds and constant booming thunder and lightning.
Power went out a couple times.

Next day the news said a couple tornadoes had actually touched down, and one was nearby between Mont Alto and South Mountain.
Nobody was hurt, because it touched down on the mountainside in Michaux State Forest.
This will be unimpressive to you people in the Midwest.

I forgot all about it... until late Autumn during Grouse season.
While hunting Grouse, I came across the swath that little tornado left and was astounded.

It was fifty yards wide and maybe a couple hundred yards long.
Birch and Bigtooth Aspen trees had been snatched up and carelessly dropped like matchsticks.
Larger trees had been knocked flat.
Much of the undergrowth (mostly Bracken Fern) had been stripped away, leaving bare rock

Now, supposedly in the Midwest there are hundreds of little tornadoes every year that go unreported.
That's because most of them touch down only briefly in farmland, doing little visible damage.

But let me tell you, when one of those "little" tornadoes slams into a forest, there's gonna be some very visible damage.
I wonder how many people besides me ever saw it before regrowth obscured that scar on the mountain.

It happened here also .May 29 1995 Missed my house by about 4-5 miles hit my brother in laws house and laid about 15 huge oak trees on it . Passed into Massachusetts and killed 3 people in a car , piled up lots of headstones in a cemetery and smashed into a mountain side. I also came across the destruction in the woods turkey hunting the next season . Much bigger than the one I described.
Quite an eye opener when you see the destruction, close up, at ground zero.

HAPPY MOTHERS DAY! To all the moms.

 

I remember that one. I was working my second job. I was a sophomore in high school. I worked at the state park on the mountain and I remember the rangers saying they would never be able to clean up the damage. I drove by the path of destruction every day that summer. About 50 feet wide along the top of the mountain. Just occurred to me, it could have hit Camp David cause it would have been in that path too.

A year or two before, another touched down a mile or two from our house. It took down trees everywhere and that brand new building on route 60 near the theaters.

Been scared of tornadoes since.
