3rd Gen Tacoma Spark Plug Replacement.

What’s the lifespan on the coil packs and wires?
In the “olden days” you’d be changing the wires with the plugs. I’m coming up on 60k.

Could be wrong, but I think the coils could be lifetime. Wires are very reliable now.

Ya typically coils aren't a maintenance item, you just run them to failure essentially. Even on chevs with coil wires they don't give issues unless you damage them.

 

My brand new 1992 extra-cab V6 5spd 4x4 truck after 14 years still had the original clutch, ignition coil and wires when I sold it.

 

Replacing my spark plugs this weekend. Truck right at 57k miles and I'm making a 2,000 mile drive from NC down to South Louisiana for Thanksgiving... Flights are stupid high, and I myself may be high, but I love driving.

My question is: do we need to "gap" the spark plugs? If so, what to? If not, just double check?

I always throw iridiums in as-is

 

Did this today at 79000 miles. Drivers side plugs were all pretty tight. Passenger side was a different story. All three were pretty loose, but #5 was the worst. Picture below. #1 and #3 didn't have any blow by.

 

That sure looks like a tube seal leaking from the valve cover.

 

I assume I would need to take the valve cover off to replace that seal, right?

 

Previously my wife and I had 2 Sienna's at the same time, hers was 2012 XLE, my was 2013 base.

The back 3 plugs on these slanted FWD vans are very difficult to reach, easily $500 job at independent shops.

I checked the front 3 plugs every 50k miles, they were all pristine then put back. We sold the vans at 150k and 160k miles, never changed the plugs, never missed a beat either.

I don't expect they are much different than the FKS motors.

 

Did plugs on my 4.0 2007 ranger at recommended intervals and they looked just fine, seemed like a waste of time and money.

Although I managed to cross thread the last spark plugs thread, the easiest one too. Thank god I had a buddy that worked in machine shop and was able to come and install a heli coil…

 

Did plugs today. I bought truck used with 122000km on it. It now has 139000km on it. Looks like they may have been changed at some time but now I know it has new.

 

Should i be concerned with one plug that has slightly wet threads. Clean everywhere else. Passenger rear cylinder. 59k miles

 

Changed mine yesterday at 63k miles, they looked pretty worn, trucks runs smoother, changed oil and filter... happy taco!!

Nope. And its only slightly wet around the threads only just to clear again. First time changing them.

$28 Denso 3491 FK20HBR8 Spark Plug

Denso 3491 from Autozone, dealership wanted $30 a plug which seemed really high, same part number. So i'll give autozone a shot. The manufacturers site shows 80-100k miles rating for these plugs, anyone know why Toyota is recommending 60k? Seems premature, but im at 70 so i figured i'll just swap them in regardless.
