Water inside door 2011 Access Cab

Hello all,

Truck: 2011 Access Cab TRD OR

I took my front doors off to replace the speakers. The drivers side door had a lot of water in it. The factory speaker was quite wet as well as all the metal I could see around the base of the door inside the speaker opening.

The passengers side was completely dry.

The only driving I had done before hand was .4 mile to and from the coffee shop. It had been sitting for days before that.

I'm taking it to the dealership tomorrow but was wondering if anyone had experience with this so I can go in there competent instead of having them tell me nothing is wrong.

Sorry, I took off the plastic interior door panel to access the speaker. I didn't take the doors completely off.

 

There are numberous drains in the bottom of the door (4 or 5?), so maybe those need to be cleaned out.

 

I'll check the drains.... It just seems odd to me that they'd put the speakers in a place where they'd be susceptible to so much moisture. The truck only has 2,500 miles on it.

Do people that replace their factory speakers typically put plastic or some sort of barrier behind the new speaker?

 

I have done the speakers in every car I have had and never protected the speaker (06 5 lug taco/07 fj/09 vw CC) That being said, I have noticed water marks on accumulated dust that sits on the speaker. I have also never lost a speaker due to water damage.

This information does worry me though as I have heard stories of door rattles and now leakage... does not seem like a place I want to keep very expensive electronics.

Why would the design be so that potentially expensive electronics are left out in the weather?

I took the passenger door panel off again today and there was water behind the speaker. So it looks like the condition applies to both doors. I guess we'll see if that was Toyota's design or if there's something else wrong tomorrow after I talk to the dealership.

 

This is definitely not normal. It may have something to do with the doors not closing properly on the 2011 models.

 

Maybe this truck was in Japan when they got wacked, then it got shipped out water logged!

 

I've had this problem on my 09 AC...after a good rain.
Then a couple days later, after the window has dried, if i put the windows down and then back up again
there is moisture on the glass.
I haven't removed the door liners to see if anything is getting soaked...
might have to i guess.

I also notice a wet musty smell if you smell around that rubber molding
where the glass slides down into the door when the windows are down.

I asked in another thread about this, but where are the drains in the
bottom of the door?....I also noticed my doors don't exactly line
up perfectly when closed, but i think the majority of moisture
is just getting by the rubber window seal...there are some
gaps in how the moldings are attached to the door.

 

The plastic interior door panels are super easy to take off. Takes less than 5 minutes. All you need is a philips head and small flat head screw driver. Taco Tunes has a good writeup.

Mine's at the shop now, I'll keep you posted.

I'd like to take dhk's advice but if my expensive speakers are going to be getting soaked all winter, I'm not too fond if having a decient sound system.

 

I just talked to the dealership and they're adjusting how the weatherstrip hits the glass. They think water might have been getting in that way.

He said they have it under the hose right now and it'll be ready for pickup at 5pm.

Hopefully that's the real problem and it's being solved right now. Time will tell

 

I don't understand why the water isn't draining through the holes at the bottom of the door? Is there some blockage?

 

If you look at where the outer skin of the door hooks around the inner skin (open the door and look at the bottom inside edge), you'll see slots down there that are about a half-inch long (guessing on length from memory here). They're spaced along the bottom. All vehicles will have them as it's the only way for water to get out of the door. It is normal for water to enter the door (window seals, door handles, etc), but it should be limited if the seal along the window is good (they seal much better now than it was 20 years ago).

 

Correct, it's not that the doors weren't draining, it's just that there was a major excess of water coming in. Some should be able to come in (and go out the drain holes in the bottom), but I was having a lot going through. So much that when I took the drivers side speaker out, all the plastic on the speaker was wet and some of the paper cone. That's too much.
