2005 Taco Oil Filter Wrench

Rubber strap wrench. Removes even the tightest filter, is not a specialized tool that has zero other uses. (Works great to open jars, hold onto pipes to prevent from spinning, etc)

You'll only need the small one in the pic (they are often sold in a 2 pack set like this). It helps to remove the engine plastic cover (just unbolt the 2 front acorn nuts and hinge it up).

 

For OEM filter, the OEM tool does the job. Mine works like a charm every time. 2TRFE 4cyl (OP didn't make it clear what engine)

I looked at my Toyota oil change receipt and it has P020 PENZOIL 0W20. My Tacoma is roughly 247K miles. I converted over to full synthetic oil about 2 years ago.

So...
1. Can I use mobile 1 5W-30 full synthetic?
2. Or should I still with Pennzoil Platinum Full Synthetic 0W-20 Motor Oil, 5-Quart?

You’re not wrong. No need for an oil filter wrench when it’s right there in the wide open and can even get 2 hands on it if you really need to.

How can I confirm what engine I have under my Tacoma hood?

 

Look at your emissions label under the hood, it should say 1GR-FE or 2TR-FE

 

it is 1GR-FE

 

So it's the 4.0L, that one takes 5W-30 and the oil filter is right on top near the oil fill cap.

Make sure you pay attention to which drain plug you take out, alot of people have mistakenly drained the transmission instead of the engine oil.

 

So why did Toyota put -> Pennzoil Platinum Full Synthetic 0W-20 Motor Oil

is 0W-20 same as 5W-30?

0W-20 oil at Walmart and already had it in my 4.0 before I realized what I had done. I was taking notes on mileage, date, and what oil and filter I used when I realized the mistake. Being it was summer months, hot weather, I elected to change it out to the correct 5W-30. If I had made the mistake during the winter months, I more than likely would have left it in. This is just me.
Back when I started driving we used to go straight 30 during warm weather and when the weather turned cold, it was a 10W, but oils have been made better over the years.

 

so can I just replace the 0W-20 with 5W-30 moving forward when doing oil change myself?

 

I live in the upper midwest, it can get hot and humid during the summer and below zero during the winter. Being my oil change was going to take me through the summer and 5w-30 is recommended I elected to change it out. Depends what kind of driving you're going to do. It you're going to off-road or tow I would definitely change it out?
You'll have to make you own call, what you feel comfortable with. May be there's others different opinions.

 

I live in South Texas (around Houston area) and summer can be very hot especially around August. But winter is usually not that bad maybe lows in teens.

Toyota dealership has used 0W-20 for my truck since I converted to full synthetic oil.

I think it should be ok to still continue using 0W-20 in my truck unless any other recommendations not to

1GR engine really should be on 30w. Whether that's 0w30, 5w30, or 10w30.

The reason you got 0w20 is because most modern Toyotas spec that for CAFE economy purposes. Dealers don't like to keep a bunch of different oil types on hand. Easier to just get drums of 1 grade for all.

 

Can you snap a picture of your engine so we can be sure it's the 4.0L, if it is you should run the recommended weight oil in it which is 5W-30.

Not sure why the dealer was putting 0W-20 in it.

 

You can accomplish the same thing by just loosening and partially unscrewing the filter but leaving it in place. I do this before I drain the pan, and I usually go do something else for 30 minutes so both engine and filter are as empty as possible before I continue.

 

I just use a large pair of pliers, keep it simple.
