    This artical is spot on.

Not only are there distinctly well built cars, but crappy built ones. Totota and Chysler are perfect extreems on each end. Then there are good groups of years and also bad chunks. Mid 50's till early 70's = good, mid 70's to mid/late 90's = bad. Then again it seems the best built with the best technology = mid/late 90's Thru mid/late teens. IF our present over engineer i.c.e. outlives our present period were golden. IMO we are now in a planned obsolescence period. Meanwhil the EV has flopped and the most resent emmisions overkill/over complex i.c.e. actually has a bigger carbon footprint (cradle to grave) than a 1/4 million mile pinto.

An over engineered twin turbo German Audi is fun and exciting but p.i.t.a.. expensive and short lived. Find a good 1 owner, low mile, 2002 Toyota and your life will be on a much more level ground for sure.

Don't agree, the higher costs and interest rates are symptoms, not causes. Planned obsolescence is still very much a thing, and it relies on owners to not maintain their vehicles and address issues as soon as they arise. That's also why you can only get one of the beyond-three-year loans they mention if you have excellent credit.

Mr. Jeremy Morris ought to take some of those savings and give his rig a quality paint job on that peeling hood, his taco would feel much better!

I had a 1970 Pinto with a 1.6 and a 4 speed. Was it the fastest thing around, no but it sure was FUN. That 1.6 Ford block was a revving machine, sure it was kind of ugly but for the few hundred dollars she cost, smiles were measured in miles.

I’ve owned my 99 for almost 20 years, the considerations of saving money is pretty cool, but add to that the sentimental attachment, that’s the piece that makes me think the truck may be with for another 20

Work that MPG based ROI break even up for us would you?

And use the industry avg miles/yr. of about 12k. Or a liberal 15k.

I'll use a Ford Maverick hybrid for the sample since that would be more practical if you were looking for savings vs a new hybrid taco
Buying used would make "cost2" lower and/or if gas goes up (it will), the mileage requirement goes down obviously

Funny thing is I bought a 79' pinto @ 60k. Disrespectfully commuted it for years. Drove it like I stole it. NO Issues. 8" 3:55 Mustang II rear end, lowered, Koni reds, 4 speed, 14x7/8, hot degreed cam, dual exhaust header. Scooted decent handled bizarrely well (upper lower a arms).
3k oil changes until it was hit and totaled @220k+ (was parked).

Wife had a 79 Mustang at the time. Rack and mac. Embarrassing pos. Made the Pinto seem like a Ferrari in comparison.

    I can state a fact
Bc I own a 98 and 01 and have no car payments…..I was able to buy a house after the divorce 3yrs ago.
My realtor said 18 other potential buyers bid on same house, I got it bc of my ‘disposal income’……(no $500 car payment(s))

I figure, that I’m(as well as many of us here) way ahead of that guy in the article……bc we actually wrench on our vehicles.
    $20k in repairs?

didn’t Sam Walmart drive some old ass truck even after he was worth millions?

Hell, I would classify tire costs as maintenance…not repairs

My first gen gets 13mpg now, used to get 17. My 3rd gen gets 16-18.

My friends Powerstroke gets 15 on a good day, the old 7.3’s got better than that or at least as good

It depends on what you drive and what you need and what you can afford. I can’t haul lumber in a Prius and I can’t afford a Tesla truck
