A winch with front and rear interaxle diff locks would be the ticket for sure. A couple of the trucks get you 3/4 of the way there for less money....

afer looking at the pic, they show $0 for TDA which is about $700 markup they dont show correctly that is passed on to the customer.

 

I'll take an OR with 14" screen and keep $25k in the bank.

Without the added “safety” feature of having to be in 4lo, Toyota isn’t going to put a locker in a 2wd. A clutch LSD, not an auto LSD (brake controlled) would probably serve you just as well.

 

They used to make DCSB 2wd Off-roads with a rear locker.

 

My first gen had locker in 2hi 4hi 2Lo and 4lo.

I’m not surprised and I don’t think it’s niche. The Tacoma has always been designed and marketed as a fairly competent off-roader. They offered SDM so that the truck could retain good articulation. The the 2nd and 3rd gens had some of the best rear articulation in their class because of the flexy rear c channel frame. It has a pretty impressive amount of flex stock, one of the design features that makes it so inherently good off-road, especially compared to the competition. I love flexing the rear end of my third gen on the trails. The problem is it flexes itself apart making bed stiffeners mandatory if you plan on wheeling frequently.

They moved to a fully boxed frame with the 4th gen so they naturally lost a little bit of rear articulation in favor of stronger frame. To counter act that loss a SDM became necessary. It should give it better balance now out on the trail while retaining the competitive articulation the 3g had.

Anybody with a decent amount of experience would take that boost in articulation well before a front locker. Aftermarket SDMs aren’t readily available the same way quality front lockers are. The truth is, if you are aired down with rear end locked and TRAC engaged, you will be able to clear a majority of obstacles. I run arb air lockers and have to go out of my way to put my truck in situations where the front locker is necessary.

 

The term "off-road" spans a lot different terrain which includes "rock-crawling". When I think of rock-crawling, this is what I'm talking about.




This is better suited for short wheelbase low overhang vehicles like Jeeps, Broncos, and FJs. Yes, Tacomas can go through stuff like this but I don't think they're the ideal platform. I live in AZ and I have the opportunity to drive on trails like this but have no interest in doing so.

Rutted trails, mud, and rocks like the pic below are more than the average Tacoma user will drive on.

The coil springs probably helped maintain rear flexibility with the stiffer 4g frame so again, SDM probably not needed. But if they offered a front locker and no SDM, people would bitch about that instead.

Who here uses a stock or mildly modified Tacoma on rocks like the pic above?

Chinese giant BYD unveiled its first pickup truck, dubbed Shark, at an exclusive event in Mexico City. The 2024 BYD Shark is a midsize truck with a plug-in hybrid powertrain that can cover over 500 miles. This was the first time the automaker had a global debut outside of China, which speaks of the importance that Mexico plays for its future despite all the controversy going on with the emergence of Chinese EVs in North America.

The Shark is slated to compete against the Ford Ranger and Chevrolet Colorado, as well as Toyota Hilux and Nissan Navara in global markets. While BYD doesn't sell cars in the U.S., the Shark could make a big impact around the world, as the pickup segment is big in Latin America and Asia. For now, the truck will be built in China, but the automaker is planning to unveil the location of its plant in Mexico in the coming months, and the Shark could be one of the vehicles built there.

Powered by a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine mated to two electric motors, the 2024 BYD Shark makes 430 hp combined. No torque numbers were given, but BYD says the plug-in hybrid truck can tow 5,511 pounds (2,500 kg) and has a payload capacity of 1,841 pounds (835 kg). The automaker also said the Shark can sprint from 0-62 mph in 5.7 seconds.

The Shark has an EV-only range of 62 miles thanks to its 30-kWh blade battery, and can cover 528 miles with a full tank and charged battery. This is more range than any other midsize pickup truck in America, including the hybrids. Despite being a PHEV, the Shark supports fast-charging thanks to its CCS1 port. While no specs were given on charge speeds, BYD representatives said the truck can be charged from 20 to 80 percent in about 30 minutes, which is subpar for a PHEV, but not terribly bad.

While the 2024 BYD Shark is not available in America, the truck will be sold south of the border starting at $53,440 as of this writing's exchange rate. There will be two versions available, both equipped with the same powertrain the GL and GS. BYD didn't specify what the differences are between the two trucks, but we think it's all related to the equipment inside the Shark. The 2024 BYD Shark will be available in Mexico in the coming weeks, with reservations already open.
