Sounds about right. The 4 dealers in my area do not participate in Toyota parts online but a filter from any one of them is 5.50-5.99 a pop w/ gasket.

Local Walmart carries them for 7 and some change w/o gasket.

Used to run Napa synthetic before they started smoking crack and got proud of their prices. Run mobile-1 synthetic now for about half the price.

I don't think there's a better value on the market than Costco's oil. You can literally buy 12 qts for $49, or even less when it goes on sale.

Hard to beat that for a Warren full syn. Hell that's hard to beat for conventional.

@tacoman45 Not everyone has a costco membership. A good deal for others is the Havoline 6-qt box at walmart. It is 5/30 full synthetic for $25. No membership required.

Another thing against costco oil is it does not come in high mileage formula, at least last time I saw. Walmarts Supertech high mileage 5-qt full syn 5/30 is $19. That appears to be less than costco, and is also made by warren.

I use to use Mobil 1 synthetic but when I changed it at 5k it always seen to have the consistency and feel just like water. I switched to pennzoil and now it actually feels like oil. I buy 2 jugs at a time from Walmart when it’s on sale and it ships free.

Can't really argue with either of your points there buddy. Especially since I've always wondered why Costco doesn't offer a high mileage version of their oil. Thanks for bringing that up

Speaking of COSTCO, if someone can point me to the master COSTCO thread on TW forums I'd appreciate it. I'm assuming there must be a massive one somewhere that is 500+ pages long...

Re: costco membership cost, the cost isn't $60 a year. It's free. No, wait, actually I get paid to shop at COSTCO:

    Take, say, SunMaid™ raisins. Safeway, $8 for 18 ounces. That's $7/lb. Walmart: $21 for 60 ounces, or $5.60 lb. Costco: $12.50 for a 64 ounces (4 lbs.) That's $3.12 per pound. I eat a lot of raisins, maybe 50 lbs a year..

Safeway cost for 50 lbs of raisins: $350.
Walmart cost for 50 lbs of raisins: $280
COSTCO cost for 50 lbs of raisins: $156.

Savings: $194 in raisins alone over Safeway prices, or $124 over Walmart prices. Then multiply that out across about 50 different regular purchases.. dairy.. laundry detergent.. toilet paper.. gasoline.. etc...

If there's one thing the 4.0 is known for, its being picky about oil type

I would agree and give thumbs up to all the possible deals mentioned above: Havoline, Supertech and Costco Kirkland. They are all great options.

I am a Costco member and use Kirkland 5W-30 and OEM filters at 200k and now, no issues. Also use Kirkland 0w-20 in my Highlander.

Truer words never spoken. Just last week I put the wrong type of oil in my 4.0 and it threw up all over the freeway. Spent 3 days in the Taco hospital. Dr. Mechanic said garage rest for a week and no strenuous activity for a month. So be careful what oil you put put in your 4.0, it could mean a trip to the ER.

It's tough out here trying to pick the right oil that'll keep these things going. I've had my heart broken too many times by these damn trucks

I always get my oil changed at the Toyota Dealer. If I get there early enough in the day they have free donuts and coffee while I wait!

Check out the shelf life on raisins sometime, it's basically forever.
