Sorry, I’m not sure. What year is your truck and I’ll take a look.

The Scangauge site breaks Toyota down into 1996-2002 (won’t work for transmission), 2003 -2007 (yes, if the vehicle uses CANSF and not ISO) and then 2008+.

I have the “X-Gauge” codes in my notes for you to program the scan gauge to read the auto trans temp in your 2004.

The temperature sensor is somewhere in the trans. The 2nd gen and newer also allows you to read the torque converter temp.

What I remember is that the later 1st gens have support with this X-Gauge, but before 2001 models is spotty on people that have it working.

Also, the 1st gen Tacoma never used CAN protocol, it was ISO 9141 with quite slow bandwidth.

When you say slow bandwidth does that mean the data on display may not be accurate?

Really no need to keep an eye on transmission temps unless you're pulling a boat/RV or trailer with a heep on it.
If it's truly a concern, a temp gauge won't fix it, it just raises anxiety level. Get a secondary transmission cooler. I added one to the Tundra, because camper, and have never worried about it. Prolly didn't even need it, but it gave peace of mind.

I knew someone who knows more would chime in. That thread im recalling must have been for those early 1st gens.

Totally agree. Ignorance is bliss. Worry about it when it blows up.

Not necessarily... The truck just doesn't provide as quick of updates on the screen as a newer vehicle. Also, if you were to use the UltraGauge on the 1st gen, which can display up to 7 or 8 parameters on the screen at one time, the data would be visually slow to update - this is more the issue. Since the Scangauge only displays 4 things max, I never saw an issue with it updating.
If I were you, I'd just save the $100, don't get a Scangauge, don't get an external transmission cooler, kjust let it blow up. Then do the manual swap.:spending:

But seriously, the Scangauge is nice to have because you can read/clear codes on the road if you need to as well as monitor engine temps and other things.

tl;dr: I recommend a "ScanGauge II" for a 1st gen and an UltraGauge for the 2nd/3rd gens.

F-ing seriously. I bought them when I had my truck on order and lived in D with street parking.

As it happens we moved to the mts before delivery and I don't need em here.

Actually catalytic converter lefts are a rare occurrence at this point. Last year the state passed a bill requiring used car part buyers/reseller to consult an LE database before buying and even prohibiting buying/selling if certain theft "markers" are present. Don't think I've seen a stolen converter report come in about a year. Used to see them multiple times daily.

Sprinkler system backflow preventers are the new "catalytic converters" . Seen probably 100 of those stolen in the last couple months. That or people are just back to breaking into cars or stealing them since the state dropped the crime classification down. Not even a felony any more to break into a car

I still doubt many were being sold to scrap yards in the state. The majority probably went on a truck to Mexico, like a lot of stolen bikes. https://www.durangoherald.com/artic...of-stolen-colorado-bikes-ending-up-in-mexico/

Maybe they finally arrested enough of the people responsible, or maybe something else worked, but either way it's good that it's gotten better.

At least backflow valves are only a couple hundred dollars at most (residential anyway, commercial are probably more). More harmless than wiring, AC units, catalytic converters, or even bikes. I can't imagine they are worth much as scrap. Maybe $5-10?

Last year I got a set of RCI guards and when I did a 60k service on my Tacoma, I installed them.
Three weeks ago on a late afternoon I swapped out the winter wheels for my TRD Beadlocks, test drove, retorqued the nuts and done. In the morning I had errands to do and when I got back I found a led headlamp, still on, laying on the concrete where the truck is parked under my garage attached carport.

I knew shit hit the fan when the ATF raided my neighbors home and then didnt do anything. Even with the massive pot farm under her house. She still lives there selling tons of drugs at all hours of the night. Never when to court or anything & she brags about it all the time...:bananadead:
