Why is it recommended to change differential and transfer case fluid every 30k miles?

Quick n cheap to do, I wouldn’t overthink it.

 

Watch some more! They're only 3 minutes long, but the ones where 'The Customer States' they haven't changed their oil in 60K miles?

Yeah, we were just young and didn't know these things back then. Now, when I buy used I take it in to a third party mechanic and ask them to an inspection of the vehicle. It costs me a little more, but I look at it as great insurance against the "failed" trani experience I had.

As others have mentioned these bottles have a great internal straw that allows you to get most all the fluid out without using a pump.

 

Why would anyone go to a dealership for fluid changes? I mean unless you enjoy that kind of thing.

 

Some people don’t have time or skills to perform the maintenance.the cost is about the same with fluids . I priced out the fluids for all three . Cost is close to what the dealer charges in my area . So it’s just a choice of do u trust the dealer to do the job right or have a piece of mind knowing it was done right .

 

this is something you can do for sure. it's uber simple and even if you had none of the required tools you could purchase them from Harbor Freight and the fluids for less than the cost of dealership service.

I recently changed the oil in 2 vehicles for the price of 1 at any local Handy Lube or Dealer.

 

And as a bonus you can rest assured that your drain plug wasn't torqued using the impact 3 ugga-dugga method

 

I just did my first Diff. change at 53K, the oil was clean and clear and the drain plug was normal. 2WD

 

I see it this way:

Cheap when buying a known product is good. Cheap is not so good when getting a service that cannot be fully verified.

Do you trust someone who charges (per your indication above) close to $0 for labor for the work you need?

Certainly they are not loosing $$ on any transaction... they are cutting some corners...

What are they putting in there? (Likely whatever they have in some drum in the back - not the specific fluids needed in each case...)

Did the HS dropout they assigned the work to use the right tools and torque settings to enable the next guy to actually remove them next time?? Will you lose the fluid on your way home?

We do have to trust folks are skilled in more complex work - but fluid changes are UBER easy (as stated above). You will not get any skilled staff doing this work...

 

yeah, a friend of mine says he never has time for any kind of vehicle work, but he plays video games that night after work for 2 to 3 hours every damn night.

Ya know... There was a time (like when I was young and saber-toothed tigers still roamed the earth) when public schools offered these things called 'Shop Class'... I know, some will hear that and give you that 'quizzical dog look'... But we used to learn Real Life Skills! And there were many types of them! Auto/wood/metal/electronics/etc... They were GREAT! They proved much more useful to me in real life than Algebra II ever did!
But... For some stupid reason.... They went to the wayside. Kinda' like how 'Civics' class turned into 'Social Studies' (Google it young'uns ... HUGE difference..)
But if you took enough auto shop... And even if turning wrenches was not your thing at all... You were a retard with a wrench... You at LEAST learned enough to know when some questionable mechanic was trying to raid your wallet.

Every senior had to take a course called "senior survival", we learned the basics for our next leap in life, like balancing a check book, etc.
