Laconia Bike Week in 1997, rode up with a coworker/friend from PA. Longest ride I'd ever done at that point. We got popped for speeding in VT, fine was so cheap compared to PA we just laughed about it. This slowed us down more than the tickets did.

Hey, it is old. LOL Basically unchanged from 1984 (600) untill 2022. I have owned the one in the photo for 16 years, bikes come and go, this one just kind of hung around. It's actually pretty comfortable to cover miles on, but it's no high-speed tourer, happiest at 55-65 mph.

It's been the cheapest bike to maintain I have ever owned. I take it out maybe once a week these days.

Mine is kind of the odd duck. It’s a 2016, but the mid-year update that slapped the radiator on. It came with the Shinko 804/805s on it. Can’t remember what size the front is, but the rear is a 140/80-17.

No dude. I just went back to look at the pics you posted. That’s an oil cooler. Just look at the heads, that screams air cooled. AFAIK no 2016 model was water cooled. That’s a different engine altogether. And the tires that came on my scrambler when new from the gas they were Bridgestone trail wings 100/90r19 front & 130/80r17 rear.

Okie doke. I’ll have to take your word for it. Lol. I was confused as hell when I picked it up since everything I had read said it was air cooled. I read on the Triumph Rat forum that they mid-year updated them and just kinda ran with it, but it being an oil cooler makes sense. Having it for 3 days never gave me enough time to really check it all out.

Thank you! Bike #600 produced, had Erik Buell autograph it for me along with a photo of me with him from Laconia that year. I still have that bike.

I always wanted a Buell, just other things got in the way. Kind of wonder why Harley didnt try harder to promote them.

    By the way, IBA 22425

Buying that Buell led to me working part time for the dealership I purchased it from. Dealership sold out to new owners and I was kept on with them eventually making it 16 years working part time and getting to ride more bikes than I ever imagined.

22425? Nice! What year was your first IBA ride then? I earned mine through a 24 hour rally put on by an IBR finisher that I know. That meant my first one involved gathering up bonuses while "on the clock" including a near 2 hour rest bonus believe it or not. Now I'm considering trying to put my name in for the 2025 IBR.

Assuming the numbers are issued chronologically you're way, way before my time at #80228.

I have determined that some numbers do get reissued. Once a rider would complete the actual Iron Butt Rally they are given a new number, currently a 3 digit number though I believe up through number 2000 are reserved for future finishers. My number of 50866 must have been a reissued number as when I was given that I knew others who got numbers well beyond that. I've never asked him but it's possible I got my friend's old number since he completed the IBR in 2015.

There would be no point in having an IBR finisher retain their old number once they earn that 3 digit spot and I'm not aware of them retiring numbers though I could be wrong.

May 12th of 05. Dallas to Prescott AZ. I kind of fell out of the long rides, work started getting in the way, wife had some health issues that kept me close to home. 04 to 06 were my heaviest riding years. I used to roll out of bed on a Saturday morning about 4 am and just ride and explore, stayed away from interstates, just state highways and farm to markets. See a road, just take it and see where it went. About 5 pm, turn on the GPS and hit the home button. Then ride the interstate. LOL

I think I finally got my number in 2015?

I did my first long distance rally in 2013, the Mason-Dixon 20-20 after meeting some other FJR riders for breakfast and meeting my first IBR finisher. They were telling stories of other rallies I'd never heard of and it sounded like the kind of goofy fun that I would enjoy so my ex and I signed up the next Spring and did our first event. 31 hours with a mandatory rest bonus and we still covered over 1100 miles and managed to finish. We were both tired and a little sore after but had a lot of fun and met a lot of really interesting and cool people. We did the Void Rally that same year in October and I've never looked back. Never seriously considered entering the actual Iron Butt Rally until last year. I did a Memorial Saddlesore nested in a 36hour/1500 mile Bun Burner then went to the start of the IBR near Pittsburgh the next morning on my way home. Was visiting with some of the entrants I'd competed against through the years at smaller events and two of them asked me if I was riding in the rally. Told them no, I'm headed home and they both told me I owe it to myself to come out and play next time. That started me thinking and starting to fabricate a plan.

I actually gave a rider my FJR on day 10 of the 2019 event to finish on after their BMW suffered catastrophic engine failure. I'm told that may give me some good karma regarding my potential entry for 2025.

Definitely older and been riding far longer than me. It’s been fun reading your memories you’ve been posting. I’ve only got about 20 years of riding time and only about 8 of that has been actual serious riding with a bike in the garage.
