So much to learn!

in the Apple world, I have the apple calendar that integrates with my phone and computer. I place appointments on my calendar and the address I need to drive to. With Apple Carplay, I bring up the address on my phone on my calendar and it goes right into the gps… I just got rid of my 2006 Tundra, probably a mistake, in which I had installed an aftermarket CarPlay radio. No need for steering wheel integration or any entune stuff.

now, I am on the learning curve with Entune 2.0, 3.0 etc…. I just want CarPlay and the volume and song selection to work. I don’t really want to give up any Entune functionality. Kind of want my cake and eat it too…

You can "have your cake and eat it too" The Carplay can run in the foreground or the background. For instance, I can listen to FM radio and have the FM Entune screen up and even have up the Entune GPS and Hear Waze updates if I have it on on. Seeing the the Carplay interface is easy. Just press the "PHONE" button on the right hand side, although I'm not sure the 2020+ Tacoma Entune has this Button. My Entune 3.0 came from a Sienna because I wanted a CD player, so I have hard buttons.

 

Been looking at alternate vehicles that seem to have the same 3.0 system like OP. Found a good deal on a Corolla system. Anybody have a more in depth list of what’s compatible from other vehicles to the Tacoma. Have 2.0. Want 3.0 and CP. Any help appreciated.

No. Looking to buy still but was hoping to get someone else’s knowledge stronger than my own about the subject to give me some confidence in the purchase.

How did you decide this model? I have the JBL package on my '18 do you know if that model will work for me?

 

I wanted a unit with a CD player. I am non jbl so the unit I got wouldn’t work for you. There’s probably a model that supports jbl. Not gonna lie, trying to find the right part numbers is quite the chore.

 

Hello, I have a 2019 Tacoma Off Road with Entune 2.0, non JbL. I am interested in doing the Entune 3.0 Swap but am a little confused on which part# headunit to look for. My headunit now does have navigation but I am fine without having navigation in the 3.0 as I will be using Apple Car play. If anyone knows which part #s will fit my truck, it would be much appreciated!

 

86140-04200 is the stereo # THis is the part # for the 2020 + Tacomas. Keep in mind that some of these come with the GPS box and some don't It seems like more do. If you're buying one, try to look at it from the back and to see if it has the unit if you want it but you said you don't care. Keep in mind you will also need the custom harness from autoharnesshouse.com. Here's a link to what the stereo and GPS unit look like.

Im looking up the 86140-04200 model HU from pull apart yards and ebay. Someone brought up that we might need to reprogram these? Is there any validity to it? I currently have a 17 TRD Off Road w/o JBL but it does have the navigation system and Sirius XM.

 

You reprogram them either for the Carplay update or if you're having issues with the unit itself. The part # you mentioned is from a 2020+ Tacoma. The unit you have in your 2017 is Entune 2.0. You cannot reprogram a 2.0 into a 3.0. I reprogrammed a unit from a 3.0 Sienna but it didn't have Carplay. Toyota released a TSB to add Carplay to these units.

 

Apologies, I was referring to the 2020+ Tacoma HU if it needed to be reprogram (for compatibility reasons?) prior to install on my 17. Or it just an easy plug and play with the harness adapters?

How has this worked out in the long run? I have a 2019 that I would like to upgrade, but the 86140-04200 and 86140-04250 head units are crazy expensive on eBay. Does this unit have the integrated nav? I don't use it regularly, but I'd like to swap like-for-like as much as possible. Thanks!

 

It's been fine. No problems whatsoever. The one I have has integrated nav

 

This is what I got. I didn't spend this much. Although, $400 is still a lot cheaper than $1000. This one would need to be updated, like I did, if you want to use Carplay. No AA. When you look at the back you can see the 2 separate "boxes" both have wire connections. This one does have the one harness that connects the two boxes. You want to make sure you get that when you buy one of these. Oh and keep in mind that you may find the right part # and it may not have the NAV so verify visually

The more I read the more confused I get! I have a 2019 TRD Off Road with a 2.0 Entune system crappy speakers swapped out. I had the NAV when it was new! My window sticker says it's Premium with integrated nav. I have watched videos on You Tube about swapping in a 3.0 and this radio was being touted 86140-04230. Now i am reading here what is and what's not and I'm not sure anymore. Help guys??? P.S I am fine with harness swaps and moving electronics not my issue.

 

I wanted to do the same thing back then but all I really wanted the new HU is for CarPlay so I can use Waze. Spending $500 to $800 was not worth it for me. I just use my phone to use Waze and saved the money.

 

I really don't understand the prices for these factory head units. People upgrading don't want them and the prices don't make sense or maybe there are too many buyers. Years ago, a factory head unit was a dump not a pump.
