What is the code? I know you need a barrier that kiddos can’t run through, but I don’t think you have to have 2x2 spindles. That looks like it will keep a kid on the right side of the decking.

If I recall correctly, you're not supposed to be able to put a 4" ball through the railing so a kid can't get their head caught.

Speaking of which, I need to pressure wash the vertical deck and repaint it. It's been 3 years and I starting to flake off a bit because my wife didn't want to let the pressure treated lumber dry out first.
