Selling my Tacoma now and probably buying a Tundra next year.

I've been liking the new 2024 Tundra Platinum 6.5ftbed Supercrew Max with a 3in Lift, new tires and Canopy. Going to be offloading, lots of trips, hunting, fishing and hopefully pulling a camper in the future.

Anyone have any thoughts on this truck and what price is fair for it. Also, what the price might be in 2025? Doing some pre assements on what to expect. I spent 60k on my Tacoma and really would love to keep the Tundra under 50k. Reality probably says it will cost a lot.

The hybrid tundra just gets more power . They literally were not designed for mpg like a traditional hybrid. You won't see anything in the 20s or probably even high teens mpg wise in a Tundra, put it in stone lol foxwalkhq was talking about his tundra (crewmax)

You're not gonna get a Platinum Tundra under 50k.. At least not new.. Platinum non-hybrid starts at $61k.

Yeah I had a feeling that was the case, which is why I am pretty damn sure I will probably get a Tacoma TRD Pro.

Gas mileage is king with me esp since it will be my daily driver and only vehicle for a while.

I really enjoy my tacoma. But if you want to tow stuff, get the tundra.

The only thing I'd ever wanna tow is maybe a Patriot trailer, and I don't even know if I will ever get one. I think 6k is probably enough towing power for me.

Ok cool. Ya the tacoma can theoretically tow that. But you would max out the tongue weight limit first. And it would probably suck in the mountains. Tundra would be better probably

Well there's a good chance that this would never even happen. But I've seen people tow Patriot trailers all over the place with gas Gladiators and those are ... very inferior power to the iForce Max... :) Maybe it's not ideal, maybe it requires more skill.

But let's just put it this way. If I ever am in the position to buy a Patriot trailer I probably would be in the position to have a Tundra already.

I don't have any backseat passengers.. Most likely will be getting the Goose-Gear rear seat delete on whatever I get, and when I visit family maybe putting the 40% seat in ..

So I have decided on a Tacoma TRD Pro.

The guy at the dealership today let me test drive the Tundra TRD Pro he has (2023) and test the gas mileage.. We didn't take it that far but I didn't see higher than 17. This is the hybrid, and then I saw a real world MPG test of the Tundra TRD Pro and it got ~18 on the highway which to me is just not good.

The same tests on the Tacoma got 20mpg.

I know it seems silly a couple mpg but I have to go with the highest even if it's just a few mpg.

Otherwise I would prefer the Tundra. but they are stupid expensive. I can't believe the new ones start at 73k.

The guy at the dealership told me I might as well get a Tundra though because the Tacoma TRD Pro is going to be $65k and with the destination charge and everything will be close to $70k.

This guy at the dealership is trying to get me to buy the Tundra TRD Pro 2023 that I mentioned..

He's telling me that he can do it for me no money down with a higher payment than I pay for the Jeep but lower than this other crazy price he told me before with $15,000 down.

And the guy also told me "The Tundra TRD Pros always retain their resale value so if you buy this one you will have a lot more equity later when you want to trade it in."

He also told me that the Tacoma hybrids aren't coming out until 2025.. I said they're 2024.. he said yes but you have to pre-order them and they won't come in until 2025. He's saying he can get me a non-hybrid..

Is any of this true or is he just trying to get me to buy something now?

Like I want to buy something now ideally but I do NOT want to buy something that isn't what I want and then I'm in the same boat of not being happy with what I bought.

my read is that he’s trying to make the sale now on a truck that’s on the lot.

if you still want the Tacoma TRD Pro then pass on the Tundra.

in my area demand is exceeding supply so your stuck either waiting until there’s an allocation or paying ADM (not a fan).

not sure if you have other dealers in your area but I’d reach out to them and get on as many lists for the Tacoma TRD Pro as you can.

the waiting game sucks but as you acknowledge you don’t want buy something that isn’t what you want and repeat being unhappy with your purchase

    good luck

The hybrids are taking a while. Happened with the Tundra too. Even the Siennas were delayed because every Sienna was a hybrid.

I tend not to trust salesmen. Unless you personally know the person that is. He's trying to sell you a vehicle now rather than in the future.

My question is, and I'm not trying to sound like an ass, but if you're looking at $1500 a month +/- and a truck between 50-70k, while are you so focused on saving money on 5mpg?

You could easily find a 2019-2021 Tundra or similar years on a Tacoma and spend 20k less and only sacrifice 5mpg. The cost savings on those 5mpg's will take forever to payoff the 20K you're spending on a new truck.

If it's a matter of budget, then the wiser option is going lower on a purchase price and sacrifice the small fuel savings.

Sorry if this is thread-jacking but I think it's on theme. I have a paid-for '23 Tacoma OR, MT. I want a Tundra for legroom in the back. Don't need to to tow anything. I do need 4x4.
    1. What Tundras should I be looking at if price is an issue?
    2. Should I even be considering this?
    3. There are no Tundras with MT?
    4. What's the best financial way to do this? Would consider most options but am not looking to add a huge monthly payment.
Thanks. (Mods, I can move to my own post if you prefer.)

If you’re not towing anything, or at least heavy, go for a 2019+. It’ll get you led headlights/fogs, keyless remote, CarPlay etc. Toyota dropped the transmission cooler starting in 2019 so that’s the only concern.

Tacomas have high resale but so does the tundra. A friend of mine is looking at a 2017 sr5 with 73k and the dealer wants 29.8k for it. That’s Ohio at least.

A crewmax will have the largest backseat but only in a short bed.

the third gen (2022+) won’t really net you more mileage and there’s also a major recall. Check out tundras.com for more on that…

unfortunately with Montana being so remote, you might have to travel some to find what you want. Maybe even fly somewhere and buy then drive home.

I'm in Idaho but same deal. I had to fly and drive for my Tacoma. Just scour Craigslist and the dealers? Any tricks if I'm selling vs. trading in? Thanks. Will keep my eyes open for the Crewmax.

Oh MT as in manual transmission, not Montana lol I gotcha. Nope no manuals. But private selling your Tacoma would be the better way to go to maximize your return. If not, a dealer will lowball you because they still need to turn around and sell for a profit.

Avoid the new Tundra right now. The 3.4 twin turbo is a bad motor. Eating bearings left and right. Toyota claims it’s debris, but I’m not buying it. It’s a design flaw in the engine oiling system. This why bearings spin.

That’s some pretty poor info right there. The recall is regarding debris in the engine. Pretty sure that’s hard to cover up a design flaw in the oiling system by calling it debris in the engine.
