John Wayne reportedly stayed pissed off during the filming of True Grit and wouldn’t speak to anyone off set. He had lobbied for his daughter to get the part of Mattie. Being close to the age she was in the book…fourteen. Kim Darby was 24 and pregnant at the time. He also wasn’t happy about Glen Campbell being cast. Ironically, it was the only film he ever won an Oscar for.

 

I saw True Grit, and at least a few other John Wayne movies in theaters with my dad when I was a kid.

I've read the book "Green Berets", upon which the John Wayne movie is based, several times. Love that book!

In his final movie. "The Shootist", the bar where the final scene in the movies takes place, is a real, working bar, not a Hollywood set. It is located in the small northwest Nevada town of Genoa, just east of Lake Tahoe. I've been there, it was s bit surreal to actually be standing in not just a place where a movie was filmed, and not just a John Wayne movie, but his *last* movie.

I’m sure I’ve seen a few John Wayne movies but so long ago I don’t remember

 

Just can’t sit thru one, not my cup of tea. I’m sure I’ve seen most of each of them but can’t tell any of them apart

 

My dad was a huge fan. He had every movie he ever did. When he passed away, his movie collection was the only thing my siblings and I “argued about”. We finally decided that my older brother should get them. He was the only one of us that owned a VHS player.
