    Hello all,
I am a brand new truck owner (never owned a truck) and absolutely love my 2004 Tacoma.
I am replacing the struts and shocks with OEM parts. I received a call from Toyota dealership earlier today and they told me they have the spring coils for the struts on the passenger side, but Toyota apparently discontinued the springs on the driver side. I find that odd. They all blame it on the supply chain.
Does anyone have any recommendations/suggestions/insight whether this to indeed be the case.
I aim to always buy OEM.
If this is the case, can anyone offer me advice where I can purchase the springs from another reputable manufacturer?
    Thanks guys!

    Welcome to TW.

They will set you up with assembled coilovers (these trucks don't have struts) as close to stock as possible with Bilstein shocks and Moog springs at the best price I found. I have been running with them since last year. Here is how they were shipped.

They stock from warehouses all over the country, my order came within days instead of weeks and their support is very responsive. Hook up with them and see what you find.

Striving for OEM parts is great, but for things like suspension components, better or as good aftermarket parts exist. I wouldn't think twice about the Bilstein/Moog preassembled coilover.

    Thanks guys so much.

I appreciate it. Correct me if I am wrong please: as an SR5 owner, this does not have the TRD Offroad package. Mine is a 4WD (when needed I can kick it into 4WD by using the small manual next to the shifter--sorry don't know what that name is for the small shifter. I am assuming it does matter which type of suspension I need, right? I was thrown off by: "They will set you up with assembled coilovers (these trucks don't have struts). The dealer tells me they are struts. I don't want to be tomfooled by the dealer.
    Thanks a whole heap Guys!!

As long as your truck is 4WD (which yours is (or pre-runner -- the 2WD version of same truck) then those linked above from suspension lifts will work. Those are Billstein brand which were standard equipment on the TRD trucks, but are same fittment as all the trucks. You're good with those.

If the truck doesn't have the original owners manual in the glove box, you can find one here Toyota Manuals and Warranties | Toyota Owners

You are correct, SR5 trim is a different package than the TRD package. These badges don't really mean that much in the grand scheme of things. The TRD package was really just an e-locker, Bilstein shocks, and bf goodrich 265/70 tires. The e-locker is really the important bit of kit there, as the shocks and tires are consumables and replaced several times over the life span of the truck.

The strut vs coilover thing. Both are similar, and often used interchangeably. Struts are coil springs over a shock, which are also a locating member of the suspension geometry. Meaning if you removed the strut, the suspension wouldn't stay put, and would require an alignment after replacement. Coilovers on the other hand are a coil springs over a shock as a single assembly, and not locating members of the suspension. If you remove a coilover, the suspension would retain it's positioning, and you don't need an alignment after replacement (as long as the pre-load/ride height is not altered, ie, if replacing like-for-like, no alignment; if you lift the truck, you need an alignment).

The thing for you to know, is that your truck has coilovers in the front, not struts, but most people/places will just call them struts.

Struts and coilovers in this case mean the same thing....the entire assembled shock unit.

Pick any bilstein or OME that fits your model year and you can't go wrong

See reply in other thread with a link, what matters is whether it's a 5 lug or 6 lug. Being 4WD, I'm assuming it's a 6 lug truck (right all? They didn't make a 4WD 5 lug?) In any case before you lay any money down contact them, they are very responsive. Be sure to tell them M/M/Y, engine size, and whether it's a 5 or 6 lug.

Sorry . . . it's very common for dealers and auto shops to call them struts and it's a misnomer. A lot of shops will try to sell you Monroe QuickStruts which are actually coilovers and generally don't have a long life.

I believe the 2WD models have actual struts but if you look in the front fender wells behind the wheels and see a coil spring with a shock in the center, that's a coilover. :-D

Edit: Andy said it better, cross posted LOL

Thank you guys so damn much. I truly appreciate your feedback, help. My Tacoma SR5 is a 6 lug, Bill.
I will be contacting Suspensionlifts later today.
I am still working my way around this fantastic webpage.
    Appreciate it!

They replied to me via text very quickly. I truly appreciate the company's info man. I gave them the VIN as well just to double check. Their recommendation for the suspension is the following:
Bilstein 4600 Assembled Coilovers with OE Replacement Springs with Rear Shocks for 1995-2004 Tacoma. SKU: 4600BIL95TK

For a stock height suspension, you will like that ride/feel very much.
