Triple Honk??

Hi, I drive a 2023 Tacoma trd sport 4x4. Over the last year I have turned off various safety features that are just annoying. However, I have one really weird issue that keeps happening that I cannot recreate to show the dealer/mechanic. At random times, while driving, or sitting parked idling, with keys inside, my taco will triple honk the horn for no apparent reason. I had it happen today, parked and idling, no one around me, I’m in a dirt lot (I work construction). Last night it happened while in the drive thru line of Del Taco, person in front of me got mad cause they thought I was honking at them. Has anyone else experienced this problem? I’m seriously thinking of disabling the horn all together.

Did the dealer install one of those bogus "Karr" alarm systems?

 

I'm not sure what condition is supposed to activate a triple honk. Start by asking that question.

Like, is it when you leave the vehicle with the engine running (triple beep on 3rd gens), or is it when you try to lock the door from the outside with the keys inside? Or, most likely question, is it something that's been programmed by an aftermarket system??

Once you know when its supposed to triple honk then youll know where to look for a malfunctioning part.

 

Is it like a very specific amount of time the three honks occur or are they random in length and frequency? Not trying to be a smartass here, just trying to help. Ok, if I threw in a smartass comment, maybe I'd say your Taco is saying hi to other Tacos, but serious about the first part of this.

Just curious if anyone has been using wire cutters down there.

 

oh nothing like that lol most of them can be disabled from the menu on the dash or by simply deselecting a button like the one on the steering wheel for the lane assist

 

have you looked under the dash? typically a triple honk is only for an aftermarket alarm system. the only way the factory gear honks the horn is via the panic button, or double-lock if configured. otherwise all tone notifications of the keyfob system go through the separate beeper, which should only be one tone for lock, two for unlock, and three for key fob in vehicle while running.

 

OP, I did actually try to find some information on your issue.
Apparently, there are 2 horns and 2 different pitches.
Is the "honk" the same sound as when you press the horn?
Or does it sound different?

 

I had a work van that honked every time you hit a bump on the road. Dispatch would get calls about me honking at people on the highway when I wasn't. It was great, good luck finding it.

Sounds different but I just assumed because it was a short honk three times in rapid succession

 

And that would cause the vehicle to honk while driving despite not touching the key fob?

 

Where's the remote when this happens?

 

I googled it and didn’t find much other than something about touching the door lock. I’ve personally never heard it or heard of it.
