Are all tailgate locks trash?

Yeah, I know 2 guys that have lost tailgates that were secured with that lock.
They found pieces of the lock. One of them had washers on the side wire straps, and they just cut the straps off.
I like the taser Idea Not as good as lead but pretty good.

shattered on impact sounds like cast parts, gotta spend more and get a cnc titanium one!, then the only weak spot is the lock lol

 

This is what I have. My theory is that it doesn’t look like anything to a thief. They won’t know why the tailgate won’t come off so will give up.
If you have a big lock on there, they know exactly what to hit with a hammer to get the prize.

 

I mean, I get the whole T45 security bolt idea, but I don't see how thats any more secure since you can get the tools needed to remove them from just about anywhere...

 

Maybe the don't have the t45 on them. Most of the videos show a guy with a pry bar and/or some sort of hammer/sledge.

Maybe they move on.

 

My point is, it's still easy to defeat. Most videos they probably haven't come across it yet, but once they do they'll just keep the tools with them, just like they keep pry bars and hammers. Don't get me wrong it's better than nothing, but still easily defeated.

Nothing is 100% secure. If someone wants it, they'll find a way.

 

it was not easy to remove the factory bolt it was pretty hard, its a tight squeeze TRUST ME lol I broke 2 bits trying to get this out, until I wiped out the Milwaukee impact wrench, With that being said I dont see no one taking there time to unscrew this just to get a tail gate lol....

 

You'd be surprised. Once they come across it and know how to defeat it, it's nothing to them. Red lock tight may help to frustrate them enough to give up, but it's going to make it a bitch for you when you need to get it off.

If you doubt you'll ever have the need to remove the tail gate you could fill the torx hole with weld and paint over it, but if you find you did need to remove the gate you'd have to drill the bolt out. Probably the best route if you're really concerned lol.

 

Bro Just keeps on Hating and finding all negative shit to say, lol not worried about my tailgate getting stolen unless they want to look down my barrel when pointed in there face lol....

Fill in the face of the bolt with metal epoxy.

 

I just keep mine locked.

Ok, I now like where this is going. Weld a solid washer over the torx and if needed to remove the tail gate in the future use a Dremel to cut the weld. Paint over the washer to hide just what the deterrent is. As previously stated the torx is insufficient. If a thief can carry around an unwieldy tail gate, a few simple tools will not deter them from their quest.

There are a lot of good thieves, Ok, not good but intelligent thieves who like a challenge. Many commenters are not giving the thieves enough credit.

Casing a job is not unheard of. If I were a tail gate thief and was initially deterred by one of these tail gate theft devices it would only challenge me to look harder at a solution.

 

fill the tailgate with phone books...they won't get far, they may even be pinned under it
