question for you and other people that own or have owned groms. we all know these bikes get hooned around on pretty good.... i mean its kinda the purpose of them haha but what is your thoughts of buying a used one over new? the gf wants one and new prices are honestly not bad at all out here at like 4ish k out the door so wondering if its even worth to find used or to just buy new?

I've done the same thing to prolong a helmet. It might not be the best idea and if racing would be a serious no-no. Shoei has stopped offering the Neotec 2 or 3 in hi viz yellow so I still use my old original Neotec for now.

$4k OTD I would probably just go new especially with the new ones have the 5 speed and other upgrades over the OG/SF generations. I went used because the market here is so inflated I was looking at $5k for a new one and I still paid $3k for a 5 year old one (though it hadn’t been beaten on, had low mileage and a lot of $$$ mods).

Then again if you could get a lightly used one for ~$2k that would leave a lot of money for upgrades as well (and to be honest stuff like the bars should be upgraded because the stock ones are junk).

I just popped over to FJRiders.com forum and saw a friend of mine from Louisiana posted his SPOT for a weekend ride. He's trying the 100CCC this weekend. That's Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean and back to the Atlantic Ocean in under 100 hours. Route is Jacksonville, FL to San Diego, CA and back. He's also tying this in with an attempted SS6000 so 6k miles in just 6 days.

More than the cheek pads its supposedly the EPS shell that degrades over time and replacing pads isn’t going to help that.

I probably spend more money than I should but for $120/year or $10/mo I’d just get a new helmet every 5 years. I do get a lot of mileage out of my stuff (at least at my current rate of use) so usually my gear doesnt even last more than a few years anyways.

That is insane! Thats a level of riding I dont think I could ever get to. I felt pretty comfortable finishing the BBG (at no point was I falling asleep or feeling like I couldn’t make it) but even then, I feel like I got lucky and dont know if I’d attempt that again, let alone one of the CCCs.

dang that is a lot of inflation! but ya 4k otd is a pretty dang good price tbh for one. so we will have to look into that when one actually shows up at a dealer haha.

agreed on the 2k price even if its a bit tattered 2k is a damn good deal for a cheap first bike for her to learn and puts around on with me.

    thanks for the info!

I wouldn't mind trying the 50CC ride but then I'd want a decent amount of time to enjoy my return trip. This particular friend, Nate, has been continuing to up the stakes with making his rides progressively more difficult. He's hoping to someday get into the Iron Butt Rally. I've sent him bonus listings for some rallies that I've ridden in just for him to practice the thought of bonus hunting.

Even if beaten on a bit, Groms are pretty tough bikes and parts are cheap. Only thing I’d watch out for is if the bike has a cage, they can crack the frame at the engine/cage mounting points. That’s why i took mine off and have peg sliders and a sub cage instead.

Depends how your helmet has been stored/treated, I'd say. Like mentioned, the 5 year recommendation is due to degradation of the foam that cushions the impact. I believe general consensus is that 5 is the overly cautious estimate of manufacturers for liability reasons, and 7 years is more realistic for light/little use. You haven't been using it daily, so I imagine it's stored in a cool, dry place when not in use and doesn't see much of the elements, so I wouldn't be too concerned. If you were a daily rider, rain or shine, I'd be more wary.

yes it is always stored in a cool dry place in a locker in the garage. Never dropped, I wear a baklava ect. Since I bought it in 2016 I used it on my 2002 Yamaha FZ1 and only put about a 1000 miles on that bike. Then bought the Harley and bought a speed and strength helmet for that. Then bought the 2012 FZ1 in 2019 and wore the shoei on that bike for about 1300 miles. I wore it on the R3 for another 2000 miles or so and a few times on the monkey. So really it hasn’t been used much at all. That’s pretty sad really. I will use it more this summer and might look into replacing it next season.

Damn!! Not supposed to rain today so going to take the FZ1 out for a ride. I swapped the sprockets from 17/43 to 16/45. Stock is 17/45. The 17/43 was ok but I think the engine wants a bit more RPMs . I need to check the speedo and set the 12oclock labs speedo healer.

I really need to get around to washing my bikes. The Super Tenere is covered in bugs and road grime from the Iron Butts last month and the KTM’s tail light is completely covered in mud.

Got the fairing on. Need to relocate turn signals down on the forks. Just wanted it for longer rides, not planning on keeping it on around town.
